How to stay at the sunny side
allmappedout replied to Dedjal's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Unless I'm missing something obvious, the only place that you could do that would be if you were orbiting the planet at a distance of 1 AU....which would put you smack bang within the Sun....? Still, it would be guaranteed to be sunny! -
How to pack enough parachutes?
allmappedout replied to Spektyr's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
If I'm not mistaken, the drag figure on the parachutes is also affected by the mass of the parachutes themselves, which is why there are two parachutes with 500 drag but they most definitely provide different values of drag. -
seconding this. Quick question for the fine folk that will know - if you are sat in a seat, will you, perhaps, be able to get a first person mode view if you 'IVA'? I think he's being ironic as Kentucky isn't exactly famous for smarts...

How universal is math as we know it?
allmappedout replied to nhnifong's topic in Science & Spaceflight
However, the one building block that you can start at is counting. One of anything is always one, and you can start from there. Indeed, Stargate SG-1 covered this when they used the Periodic table (another universal constant) to bring together 4 different languages. Of course, you eventually need the equivalent of a rosetta stone for more abstract things, but if you have one piece of commonality, you can begin to plot similar concepts between cultures and/or races. -
Every. Single. Time. I will repeat my bit ad nauseum. Nobody can or should tell me, or anyone else, how to play a single player game. There's no legitimate way to use Mechjeb, there's only yes or no. Nothing else matters. The only place this discussion should ever be is in the challenge thread, and even then it's tenuous. Do what you want, how you want. Don't use the internet to try and justify how good a pilot you are because you do or don't use MJ. It doesn't matter one jot to anybody else, and it does not give you the right to preach at others about how their achievements are not as significant as yours because they do something differently.

Do you miss the Space Shuttle Program
allmappedout replied to Commander MK's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Definitely testing for the X-301... -
Yes. 10chars.

I think there's an option to make the node appear at the next ap/pe, check the maneuver planner part. The AN and DN are the points where your orbit changes from being below the other orbit to being above it, and vice versa. It's the most efficient place to change inclination (in almost all cases) because it's a bit like a pivot point for your orbit, relative to the other one.

I think i'll skip that part, and load up on Nuka-Cola instead.

Does that mean its time to start collecting bottle caps?

Is asparagus the best staging system? (might contain science)
allmappedout replied to Pbhead's topic in KSP1 Discussion
I always tend to think of Asparagus staging as compounding the maximal rocket equation to smaller segments of time (t) - ie: you want to reduce as mass as quickly as possible (hence dumping it as soon as it's done) whilst keeping constant (or increasing) thrust. Thus I guess the idealised solution would be having an infinite number of infinitely small tanks which weighed an infinitesimal amount, st at each delta t, these tanks were discarded as they were emptied. Obviously this is impossible, and hence delta t is longer between drops, but the idea is the same. Maybe I'm overcomplicating things... -
Pretty sure it's He-man....You save Delta-V by the power of greyskull.

Well done sir, very clever! I like it! -
What has KSP do to change your regular life
allmappedout replied to TheCanadianVendingMachine's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Everything I learned on my maths degree became suddenly relevant. It was like a burst of clarity. -
Mechjeb 2 has made it so much easier to fly SSTOs. Too easy? Maybe, but who am I to complain? MJ has superior throttle control to me, it can do what I cannot - I can't make microscopic adjustments whilst monitoring intake air.

I think it's for the really picture heavy threads, and so that people can post a lot without murdering a thread - I'm reluctant about opening known image heavy threads just because I'm impatient and my interwebz is garbage

Landing on specific planet coordinates?
allmappedout replied to Pwntheon's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
The problem with atmospheric planets is that you can't accurately predict the deceleration due to Aerobraking, but on the Mun this shouldn't be a problem - just set up a maneuveur node, and see if it's where you want to be - i might advise having something like Mechjeb so that you know where you need to be in terms of where on the surface that co-ordinate is... -
Amen to this, and kudos on the Mal quote!

Magic Boulder has a cousin. Some Pictures :)
allmappedout replied to bigdad84's topic in KSP1 Discussion
If Jeb doesn't get what he wants...You're gonna have a baaad time. -
Try to 'land' on Jool. It won't accomplish anything, but the first time I did it, I fell about laughing after Jeb flailed about on the surface for a while before evaporating in a poof of smoke

[0.19.1+] NASA Apollo LLRV (Training Vehicle)
allmappedout replied to R0CKSTAR3N3RGY's topic in KSP1 The Spacecraft Exchange
I'm curious how it works (not having tried it, so it may be really obvious, but i'm at work...!) - do you have to switch focus from the kerbal to the ship again to enable the ejection, and do the chutes deploy automatically, or do you have to keep focus on the probe? -
Absolutely gutted that he's left. I don't know the reasons behind it (and I hope it's not as simple as just a few nasty voices in the community), but it doesn't matter. It's a big loss to the KSP community. He was great fun on the live streams and I really enjoyed watching them after work (6pm GMT is perfect timing for me!), and I know he did a load of work with the forums, both posting and maintaining. Good luck in all you do!

It was an incendiary comment, and that's not what this thread was aimed for. Whilst I may not agree with what you were saying, you have every right to say it, however, saying it just to get a rise out of people isn't in the spirit of this thread.
