  1. BABYLON: Derelict

    734269_4871544354457_599632670_n.jpg

An EPIC custom scenario challenge for experienced players.

    TO ALL KSC PERSONEL:

EMERGENCY! KSC lost contact with our colony on Laythe! All atempts to communicate with colony failed. Not a single bit of data on what could have happened in far away Joolian system. Someone will have to fly to Laythe and investigate.

IMPORTANT STUFF BELLOW PLEASE READ ALL!

    RULES:

    1. For start you are allow to fly only ships/stations in orbit of Kerbin/Mün

    2. Switching to another craft is allowed only after you get closer than 2.5km (render distance)

    3. No cheating obviously.

    4. You can watch all objects via tracking station.

    5. Provide screenshot/video/GIF proof of succesfuly reaching each objectives

    6. Aditional launches of stock crafts from Kerbin are allowed only for refueling provided ships + for retrieving Kerbals from KERBIN orbit.

    7. Scavenging equipment found anywhere is highly recomended!

    OBJECTIVES:

    1. Reach Laythe with ships provided in scenario (50 points)

    2. Find out why there is no communication between Kerbin and Laythe (20 points)

    3. Investigate the status of Saphire station on low Laythe orbit. (50+100 points)

    4. Search for DCMS Ark Roayl and MCLEC Anicetus. Report status of ships, rescue crews. (200+200 points)

    5. Commence search and rescue operation on Laythe surface (300 points for each Kerbal)

    6. Go investigate unknown signals around Jool systém, provide informations (100 points for each)

    7. Provide informations on status about Gamma orbital station. (100 points)

    8. Return all Kerbals to Kerbin/Kerbin orbit (500 for each)

    Multipliers:

    1. Fleet operations – bring more than one ship to Laythe in single launch window (1.5x)

    2. Leap of faith - bring KADF Valiant to Laythe and back. (1.2x)

    3. Scavenger – finnish all objectives without launching refueling mission from Kerbin (2x)

    4. Home sweet home! – return all Kerbals from Joolian system to KSC! (2.5x)

Max. multipliers are adding to each other.

    Aviable ships:

DCMS Discovery – An obsolete Damkina class mothership which was used extensively during Project BABYLON. DCMS Discovery is last unit ever bulit and launched to orbit. Many flaws in the design were discovered during the use of these ships, mainly with electrical instalation failures. Ship is loaded with SSTO shuttles which are very well suited for both Laythe and Kerbin operations.

MCLEC Braveheart – Is a Marduk class light escort cruiser, fully equiped for voyage to Laythe. Those ships provided valuable security to all BABYLON personel for a long time. They should have been replaced by Carina class heavy cruiser, but due to severe budget cuts we have to still rely on Marduk class. Don´t forget to switch control to probe core in the nose of the craft, otherwise it won´t fly well.

KADF Valiant – Propably most modern craft in our fleet. Brave men of Kerbal Auxiliary Defence Force are providing security when bigger ships of the fleet are travelling interplanetary. KADF was never tasked by interplanetary missions, but when they heard about the problems on Laythe they want to help. The just refueled at Mün and they are ready to go! Don´t forget to switch control to probe core in the nose of the craft, otherwise it won´t fly well.

Horizon – Orbital station in orbit of Kerbin. Loaded with Kerbals, crew and SSTO shuttle. Saphire is and EXACT CLONE of this station and should be in same configuration. But who knows.

Crafts named above you can fly right away. Otherwise no switching craft before you make contact with it (2.5km – render distance)!

    HOW TO USE:

Download and copy file to scenario folder.

    DISCLAIMER:

Most of the ships provided was designen in version 0.19. I dont advice to even try using action groups on any except of ARX-6 Volley SSTO and Falcon/Sparrow SSTO. This scenario is targeted on experienced players, which can do their research on forums about the crafts provided in it and how to fly them.

Special thanks goes to Temstar, Donlokiman, Brobel, Zombipyhlax, ssTALONps and many others who provided ships and stuff for this and original Project BABYLON.

    TOP SCORE:

    1. Donfede ... 57744 points

    2. Spartwo ... 4970 points

    3. ...

  2. Well, I took kinda long brake from KSP from reasons I could not influence. But now I´m back and working hard on BABYLON: Derelict, a scenario in which player will be sent to investigate what happened to Project BABYLON crew, which ceased transmiting to Kerbin. I used ships from last save, added some new and just moment ago I discovered a true treasure - XC-700B cruiser from Donlokiman which was supposed to be commissioned as "Carina Class Heavy Cruiser", maybe I will redesing the save and use it.

Maybe you can try this ship in the scenario also, as I post it in following days/weeks.

  3. Hehe, Im just having so much fun with "old" XC-305 (one of the finest military ships ever created in KSP) creating my scenario.

This ship also looks quite nice, it look really like some vaguely reverse engineered XC-305. I would like to see it in action soon :)

BTW - where is Donlokiman gone? Kinda don´t see even his older posts here. Luckily I saved some of his ships...

  4. Any fans of Project BABYLON left?

Recently I´ve been going trough this topic with great nostalgia, sadly I didn´t had time to maintain the project due to my school + traveling duties. Plus the save file (all Laythe bases) got broken in update and it was just to hard to repair. But I wanted some kind of closure for the project, for all the people who provided the crafts, many hours of flying them into the space etc.

In near future I will present to you scenario for KSP 0.23 called:

    Babylon: Derelict

It will feature redesigned locations, new ships and story to be uncovered.

Scenario is I would say 80% finished, just some final touches.

  5. Volley flyes exactly the same as old single seater Sparrow with turbojets and LV-909 did - it even gets to orbit with same amount of fuel even sadly those small engine wouldn´t be that effective as LV-909 :) Low take-off and landing speeds are great especially for Laythe, terrain is there kinda bumpy. I still remember the hoorror of landing fully fueled ARX-3 (which is around 44t if my memory is correct) and with old SAS I slammed it down to hard many times. :D

I just did quick round to orbit and back to KSC under 44 minutes and it flyes really nice.

For use on motherships there is just une issue - the rudder may be too high, but it would propably think my Damkina class which I used as main mean of transport to Laythe :)

  6. Just quick heads up:

I have idea to restart Project BABYLON. Previous project was mainly relying on addition of resources in next patch, which didn´t happened and supply chain to Laythe was too long etc. Some of you suggested using Kethane mod and I was against it, but as time passed I ve tried B9 mod and Kethane and I must say I like them...

So what is general opinion on restarting this project with B9 pack + Kethane?

  7. I was thinking about trying those smaller engines also. Question is, if lower weight will make up for lower ISP - 350 for 48-7S vs. 390 of LV-909. I also care about aesthetics, sou I would have to put a plates on those tanks if I use small engines and that would add some parts + more weight, so I went with LV-909.

2 RCS tanks are total over-kill but: they act as counter weight. First versioun had 1 RCS tank located next to RTG generator, but center of gravity was too off-set from thrust vector, so it was bit unstable when performing full power burns in orbit. Also given the weight of the craft they give you pretty solid Dv reserve for emergency landings.

Behaviour of plane while landing is as is... It doesn´t have that much lift + center of gravity of such small craft shifts violently, when fuel is consumed. Pumping fuel into tank behind cockpit helps. With good piloting it is possible to land completely as a glider, but you don´t have much chances changing course.

As far as VTOL goes - I don´t consider them efficient for SSTO purposes. Another topic would be adding little landing legs, so SSTO spaceplane can land on low gravity worlds. But that would kinda brak concept of light and low part count SSTO which I wanted at first place :)

  8. Little bit front, but only when landing and brakind from excesive speeds.

The design is not perfekt, but bunch of compromise has to be made, when you want to built thing like this without clipping etc.

Main purpose is to serve as a light Laythe lander or as a mean of evacuating spacestation in emergency with crossrange capability.

EDIT: I consider thise craft basicaly 2/3 scale down of the best small SSTO - Sparrow by Zombiphylax. It has 2/3 of its weight and 2/3 of its parts. But it comes with bit disadvantage in form of little less stability during landing maneuvre. I will see ho LittleBird perfoms on Laythe, but I´m kinda worried that it´s high landing speed when loaded with fuel will lead to some failures.
