I agree that the aero model for some reason doesn't take into consideration the overall layout of the wings. If the aero model can't see that I've made an aerodynamic shape/shell out of the wings on the ship then the aero model in itself is inherently unrealistic. Then there's the weird issue where unless a part is connected to an attachment point, it will accumulate drag and overheat regardless of an ablative shield placed on top of it. From what I'm currently seeing is that the new aero is somewhat an improvement over the old one, but SQUAD hasn't given us any new tools or parts that can handle it. As far as I'm concerned we are still using 0.9 parts that are not optimized to fly in 1.0 aero. None of the parts are able to deal with the new aero and this is comparing a Skylon airframe running RAPIER engines barely able to cruise 1000m/s in KSP with it's real life counterpart that can easily cruise at mach 5.5 (1,823m/s). Ive considered that perhaps this is a scaling thing with Kerbin being smaller, but it isn't the case. It's also likely that the engine pre-coolers does diddly squat at improving an engine's operating altitude (due to increasing heat at high altitudes) while the Skylon SABRE has an in built engine pre-cooler that works as intended. All in all, I don't think SQUAD has given us the tools to build (at least practical) SSTOs. Building real life counterparts of SSTOs doesn't seem to work and I still have weird fantastical designs fly in the new aero, so it is still hardly that much realistic even though people claim it is. It's a step in the right direction though, but I think it still needs a lot of work.

I did manage to get my 4-man crew shuttle into a ~90km orbit, The only thing I find is that it doesn't leave much fuel for anything after that, but at least it's in orbit, so I guess I could send a mini-ferry from a station to pick up the crew to transfer over. Overall, this is the smallest SSTO under the new aero I can achieve. However when you do go larger, it gets easier. But I'm a guy who likes small and sleek and futuristic.

Jeb and Valentina were testing out my new orbital jet with Bob and Bill as passengers. Unfortunately they flew a bit too fast and the cockpit blew off. Not that Bill and Bob noticed anything with the lack of pilots, but I guess the probe core can keep them relatively afloat until it runs out of power....

Ore drilling/fuel refining in 1.0 : a built-in cheat, or not a cheat?
Levelord replied to tjsnh's topic in KSP1 Discussion
The community's increasing obsession with 'cheating' in a sigleplayer game makes me want to smash my head on the table. This isn't some contest or e-peen measuring challenge. Just launch your goddamn rockets. Besides, this is pointed out before that this was an actual proposal put forward by NASA, so it has actual real world applications. This has to be the stupidest discussion I have seen on the board. Frankly, I'm starting to regret acknowledging that this thread exists by even posting here. :I -
You are all heretics. Our true lord and savior is the magical sky kraken. He works in mysterious ways.

Whackjob KSP Youtube series? Gauging interest.
Levelord replied to Whackjob's topic in KSP Fan Works
Watching your videos would be like watching torture for CPU's. I'd totally subscribe! -
On an additional note, there's a chart here showing the number of people playing KSP at any given time. This chart appears to be more accurate (at least for Steam users) for showing player activity. http://steamcharts.com/app/220200 According tho this, the highest number of people playing at any one time is around 10,245 with a daily average peak of around 2,500 on weekdays and up to 4,000 on weekends.

What is your creative process like when you have an idea in KSP?

1. What can it do? 2. Can it be done in style? 3. ??? 4. Profit -
Make sure you don't have the thing in reverse!

I call them Koupons or Krubels

I have a potentially fun solution where you can spend extra science points into temporary 'buffs' for your rockets. For example, spend 500 science to buff this engine's TWR/tank's fuel capacity/etc etc... for this launch only. That way there's an endless sink for the science to go into that has a use and gives it an inherent currency value.

The relationship I have with my Kerbals are a bit like a Wile E. Coyote type relationship where they don't exactly die after a ship explosion, but are merely put out of action until the next 'episode' arrives. If anyone remembers the old cartoons where Wile E. Coyote tries to fly a rocket and ends up getting blown up, he appears as a black burnt cinder, but he will always make an appearance later with another dastardly plan.

You could make that small rover deploy an even smaller rover!

Part of the fun is discovering where exactly that is on your own. I used to attach small drones to my ships and launch them into Jool where I would record the different atmospheric layers and biomes on where to measure science before letting the drone destroy itself. It's a bit like the Galileo spacecraft mission to Jupiter. Most of the time, I consider a manned mission into Jool a suicide mission. I'm not sure if I can design a ship powerful enough to get back into orbit, but hey, that's what unmanned drones are meant to find out eh?

I'm more of a space potato. But there's no option for space potatoes....

I'm quite excited to see how the new update shapes up to be. So far all we heard is that at least the new aero will respond to nosecones and general shapes.

What are the feats that you've accomplished in KSP?
Levelord replied to Columbia's topic in KSP1 Discussion
My older projects are in here: Made floating Laythe bases This is the colony, designed to be modular. It has a marine science module, a landing platform and several housing bays. On the landing platform we perform routine maintenance of VTOL SSTO aircraft and refuel them as needed. Here is the single housing module And the quad housing module for more colonists. It's designed to resemble a small village. Here is the science bay where Laythe's water, atmosphere and other relevant experiments are carried out. Another angle of the layout. Feels quite cosy. Brought a giant space station around Jool Rode a Dune Bike on Duna Made an Interplanetary transfer ring for my SSTOs Older Prototype ring: Landed an asteroid: Combined Stabojet technology with my SSTOS to prevent asymmetrical flame-outs Made a decent Constellation mission Now, my latest project is deploying a monorail system on the Mun to link up a Mun Base I have built. Then after that, make a floating monorail system to link my floating Laythe bases together. Challenge accepted!!! -
Squadcast Summary (24/01/2015) - The Valentina Edition

I'm quite happy with those changes proposed, especially the new landing gears, custom fairings and aero changes. Gonna be more fun with spaceplanes! -
Keep in mind that the poll is also using the combined numbers of NEAR and FAR users. People who use NEAR have a different needs to those who use FAR (they want a better aerodynamics model but think that FAR is too much).

Is there any kind of 'ending' to career mode?

This is pretty much how I roll.
