  1. Twitter appears to be the fastest method of receiving short snippets of information, such as teasers from the devs. Reddit usually gets the same information as everywhere else, but it's nice to visit to get a different take on the discussion about the news. The forums usually get information slowest, but in the greatest detail (such as the nice Articles we've had over the past few months).

  2. Hmmm, I think I've figured out the reason Squad is porting KSP to all these consoles.

With KSP available to everyone, they'll slowly get the entire planet hooked on KSP, offering tutorials for free and gifting free copies to the disadvantaged. Eventually, they will make a shift to an MMO model with the upcoming multiplayer patch, meaning every single person playing KSP does so together, in one massive world, all launching rockets together. (This model assumes Squad has moved to a supercomputer lab in order to power the servers)

All seems idyllic and peaceful as the whole world works together. Then, one day Squad announces they can no longer support the KSP servers and shuts them down for good. Across the world, millions of people suddenly don't know what to do. Without KSP, how will they sate their burning thirst for launching spaceships? So they turn their gaze upwards. Led by the Realism Overhaul crowd, the population of the Earth focuses all their energies onto building and flying rockets. With an intuitive grasp of orbital mechanics brought by the game, we easily establish thousands of Moonbases and colonize Mars, before turning to the rest of the solar system.

Ten years after The Great KSP Shutdown, humanity has colonized the solar system, with starships on their way to nearby solar systems. Sure there were mishaps along the way (particularly the collective disappointment of humanity when they discovered asparagus rockets do not work in real life as well as they do in the game), but we overcame them and spread across the solar system. Squad then makes a system-wide announcement: this was their plan all along, to motivate humanity to pour all its efforts into space travel. Elon Musk can only shake his head in bemusement, quoted as saying "Gee whillikers, I never thought of that!"

Or not. As with the PS4 and Xbox One ports, I remain curious as to the mechanics of playing KSP on low-powered hardware and fail to see how this is a huge disappointment or detrimental to the future of KSP in any way.

  3. Newton is referring to the state of displacement of the dark mass.

Okay, this guy is just messing with us now; he's quoting Isaac Newton with regards to dark matter.

You do realize Newton was talking about a 'luminiferous aether' which provided a mechanism for light and gravity to be transmitted through space, something entirely proven false. Look up the Michelson-Morley experiment sometime to see why there is no such thing as an all-permeating aether: we'd see its effects every six months, as the Earth is travelling in the opposite direction throughout space. Same goes for your 'empty space is full of mass' theory.

  4. You could use the Part Welding mod to weld together segments of the mothership which will not dock/undock, etc. Then you only have to worry about tens of large parts, and you should be able to avoid the game-ending crashes others alluded to above. Of course, I would recommend KSP Interstellar or some other mod with high-ISP engines, as for ships on the scale of which you're talking about, the fuel requirements are extraordinarily non-trivial.

  5. I'll just.. quote myself.. What's so bad about porting?

I know, some people either do not know that Squad itself is not porting it (hence there are no lost man-hours on the full version of the game), or are taking this opportunity to voice their grievances with Squad itself.

  6. It is a big deal, because this is the official forum for Kerbal Space Program. It is logical, and basically expected that updates about the game will be made here. What makes this a big deal is this: We are basically being forced to check social media which some people, myself included will not use for a variety of reasons, reddit or disturbingly enough, other game forums, where announcements of this games dev progress are being made, and then being later posted here by either sharp eyed forum users or by squad after the fact. We are feeling by and large I would wager, that this forum is an after thought. I would posit to you the following question: Would you expect say, Marvel to post to this website first about progress being made on the Deadpool movie? No. You would NOT expect that, you would expect, and very rightly so, that Marvel would post to THEIR website first with those updates and THEN let them filter hither and yon.

First of all, I agree with you that this is the official forum and the news from development should be posted here. However, I mean to argue that whatever information posted elsewhere is really quite inconsequential and most (if not all information) will be posted here as well. Take Max's twitter post, it is extremely vague and to me is in no way an official announcement, more of like a teaser for the official announcement and post being made tomorrow. I make the case that it doesn't really matter if Max posts that sort of thing, as those who only follow the forum get that information anyways when Squad officially announces it. Also, Max is human and it sounds like he was very excited about the meeting (presumably about the 64-bit decision) and decided to let the community know through a quick Twitter update, rather than a full communications update, which will (presumably) occur tomorrow.

I, like a goodly portion of the users rely strictly on this forum for information pertaining to the game. Ignoring this forum, or as someone put it, missing the point about what we are all in a fit over, and saying a post is in the works, is salt in a community wound.

I argue that it really is not a huge deal because that information is coming out anyways, Max just let slip this a little earlier than the official announcement. I'm just not seeing why it's being made as big of an issue as for some people to urge Squad to forbid employees from posting game information anywhere else but the forums.

  7. The blurry white thing on the bottom of the picture is the part of the arm that couldn't be covered up by another picture.

That actually looks more like dirt from a hole Curiosity dug that's been blown towards the rover (hence the clear ground behind rocks).

  8. I'm not entirely sure why this is as big of a deal as it's being made. Yes, Squad employees will post things on other social media platforms than the forums, but I don't think some people are seeing that all important information about the game is posted on the forums. Some examples: the patchnotes/feature lists of updates after they've been released are always here, the Devnotes are posted every Tuesday with great insights into the inner workings of Squad's development cycles, and most of all, we get those excellent blog posts about game features (such as Harv's occasional posts, or KasperVld's aforementioned post on 64-bit coming tomorrow).

The stuff posted elsewhere is primarily Maxmaps giving Twitter followers a sneak peek of features, news which will eventually come to the forums. In this case, it's taking only two days to write a nice in-depth (I'm presuming, as they usually are) report on the mechanics of how 64-bit will work with the new engine. Quite frankly, I'd prefer that rather than Max posting a quick sentence in KSP Announcements about it.

All-in-all, the Squad employees' mentions of upcoming features are a positive thing, as it diversifies the information being spread (I'm sure there are some who can't/won't visit the forums), and that information will make it here as well, often in more detailed updates.

  9. Kerbin's atmosphere ends at 70 km up, which must be exceeded in order to orbit without being tugged back down by atmospheric drag, but to actually reach orbit, remember that you need to be going at least 2200 m/s (at 70 km altitude) sideways in order to 'miss' the planet entirely and stay up. If you burn straight up and reach 70 km, you're just going to fall right back down again.

  10. I'd love to see an art pass on the older parts to bring everything up to the standard of the newer parts. Ideally that art pass would have a art style document to go with it, outlining the style that the parts should follow with concept art / photos, so that the parts looked unified and worked well together.

Play your game your way of course, but personally I dislike the idea that Kerbals are stupid and make rockets from junk. It belittles the achievement of getting into space, both historically and for the player.

I agree. Perhaps Squad should get bac9 to come back and work on retexturing the parts? His work (and subsequent design blog post) on the Space Centre buildings was absolutely fantastic.

  11. This is a great day because I just fixed the "lines in the sky" bug for OpenGL permanently (forceOff aniso or not), also OpenGL performance may just have improved a bit. Now just a few more OpenGL bugs to fix and we're good to go.

Looking at the game running at half the memory usage with no pesky lines and anisotropic filtering working I almost can't believe it, and what's more, I just read that SQUAD is teasing full 64bit support for the next version.

Seems like this is indeed a good time to fire up the hype train.

Fantastic! Thanks so much for all your hard work blackrack; this is easily one of my top must-have mods!

  12. There is a mod made by a dedicated section of the community called Real Solar System, which essentially scales the Kerbin system up to real life sizes, relocates some of the bodies, etc. to create an approximation of our real-life solar system. I've never used it personally (Real Earth requires something like 9 km/s to achieve orbit, comparable to a light Eve lifter in stock), but if you're interested in recreating some of the challenges real space programs have to go through, that mod's an excellent look into them.

  13. Lack of polish. Read this thread, all 36 pages of it, and it boils down to lack of polish. I will never understand game designer's (or maybe it's the publishers/money holders) decisions to NOT fix the seemingly small things that can make a game go from good to great. I know, money, money, money.

I feel the main reason that the devs haven't polished KSP as much as other released games is that they still consider the game to be in active development and are adding new features to it. Sort of like if you're painting your garage, you don't clean the place up until all four walls are done, otherwise you'll just have to clean the place again at the end. Heck, the Unity 5 update requires a major overhaul to the UI system and would have broken much of the polish they would have added previously. The devs willâ€â€or at least I hope they willâ€â€likely work on polish a great deal over the next few updates, I believe there's talk of prettying the game up some as well, which I feel is sorely needed.
