Squadcast Summary for 2015-04-18 - Picture Perfect Edition!
wolfedg replied to HafCoJoe's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Well individual experience may vary, but for me constructing a rocket is half the game. I also agree with the lego-like design philosophy for the stock game. This coming from a huge fan of the procedural parts mod, because I like stock to be ...well... stock. -
9 Reasons they aren't going to be able to release this month. Plus an explanation of how just like in real countdowns there are scheduled holds, and occasionally aborts. JK of course. In all seriousness we will find out tomorrow if there are 9 somethings (other than perhaps days) to keep us occupied.

As I hadn't really been following Spacex until the last barge landing attempt (the one before this one) I can't speak for what they have and haven't said. Their website certainly could use some more information and updates about what they are doing though. I have no idea what their capabilities or intentions are besides what I have gathered from the past month or so. However, the claim that they plan to return it to the cape (which I only saw in this thread) just seems a bit odd for a nearly empty stage. All i was doing was questioning it not outright ruling it out. That being said. If there is a more informative and easier to navigate site than spacex.com that has this information. Please do share. EDIT: I did find an article on the subject http://spaceflightnow.com/2015/02/17/spacex-leases-property-for-landing-pads-at-cape-canaveral-vandenberg/ in addition to a reference in the wiki.

...moving at supersonic speeds in completely the wrong direction.
-
Do they have enough fuel for that? It would require a complete reversal of trajectory.
-
It worked for the shuttle SRBs but those were very simplistic in design. I'm not sure the exotic metals used in rocket engines would fair well in salt water even for a relatively short time. Of course this is just speculation. Completely not-serious answer. NEEDZ MOAR SAS

It should be noted that the city depicted in the picture is not Release City

Perhaps the flags are sentient and just haven't developed the ability to move yet.

The stock parts that you never ever ever use/hate.
wolfedg replied to ron1n1's topic in KSP1 Discussion
The gigantor solar arras work great and look awesome if you use them properly. They were never intended for use in an atmosphere while moving, and you also shouldn't have them deployed if you are putting a lot of thrust behind them in space like with a mainsail on a moderately small craft. -
The one thing I would like to see added is the ability for it to be directly installed over the mk16xl parachute and perhaps the shielded docking port..
-
While space is a vacuum and not conducive to carrying sound, your spacecraft would be conducive to some sounds at least in the parts attached to the CM. So I personally don't think eliminating sound entirely would be an accurate representation.

Quick Maneuver Node Question
wolfedg replied to funkcanna's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Wow and I've been playing this for how long. Guess you learn something new every day. -
Depends on whether you include staging arrangement errors due to craft reconfiguration and deliberate failures (aka fireworks/sucess). If not my failure rate is probably somewhere around 1 in 3. Take out new aircraft testing failures and it probably jumps above 1 in 10.
-
Typically I use it for the usual things you use it for namely orienting my spacecraft. However I have been known to invent uses for it like on this jet that uses rcs for pushbacks from the gate and refueling stations.
-
Yes and it also a historical fact that the very first kerbal invented the spacesuit within 30 seconds of his coming into being. Necessity is the mother of all invention.

So can anyone explain what;s the point of Mk3 plane parts.
wolfedg replied to Kerbonautical's topic in KSP1 Discussion
I must say it is very difficult to work with the current set of equipment and mk 3 parts. It took along time, but i finally made a stable aircraft. Ive given up on spaceplanes in mk 3 until we get better parts and aero. My most reliable mk 3 aircraft at this point at the antarctic refueling station. -
Oh is it? I guess I wasn't aware of that when I built this. http://s1075.photobucket.com/user/wolfedg/media/screenshot288.png.html Also to the OP Symmetry and Struts are the keys to stability.

When do you begin your gravity turn?
wolfedg replied to Brainlord Mesomorph's topic in KSP1 Discussion
I personally do a 4 stage gravity turn beginning at 10 km and lowering my angle 1/4 of the way every 10 km till at 40km i am flying level then when i reach 1600m/s I kill the engines and configure my maeuver node for orbit. On some rockets that are underpowered I have to wait longer to level off but generally this method has served me well. -
I may be all wet, but I would imagine the new drag model will take a big bite out of intake spam with the exception of perhaps clipped intakes which is borderline cheating anyway. Also I remember reading somewhere that you have to be real careful with maneuvering or you can rip wings and parts right off your ship.

Lets see here Spaceplanes that do anything more than barely reach a stable orbit. Carrying large (other than just your basic lander/probe) payloads interplanetary. Rendezvous and Docking without using up most of most/all of my rcs. Interplanetary landing and return (with one exception I landed on Ike and made it home. Now a few things that I can do well. Im pretty good at making aircraft (with the exception of ssto spaceplanes) Landing on the moon or minmus and returning is routine. Polar aircraft flights are routine. I have even flown around Kerbin (Landed at ksc literally on fumes(prior to MK3 parts)) Staring mindlessly at the VAB/SPH screen deciding what to build. Creating pointless craft that are intended/expected not to work. Spending more time reading the forums than playing the game.

well i did read though like 5 or 6 pages of this post but wasnt able to discern anything that hinted as to what was going on other than the unusual new moderator names.

So I was just watching NASA TV and saw KSP...
wolfedg replied to sedativechunk's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Now here we have a computer simulation of the asteroid approaching Kerb(cough) Earth. Mind you this is just a simulation but we have designed the spaccreaft with a claw like device to attach to the asteroid like this. Then the Kerb(cough) Atronauts will fire the main engine to slow the ... hopefully preventing the extinction event.
