  1. There are actually two space projects called Orion. - The Orion project, the megalomanic nuclear pulse propulsion project from the 50s and 60s - The Orion Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle, which is a capsule with conventional propulsion designed for up to 6 people and is currently in development by NASA.
  2. All the particles in a ring orbit the planet with an uniform speed, so when you enter the ring in a prograde orbit, the relative speed of the particles would be equal to your own and thus they would be quite harmless. But excentric, inclined or even retrograde orbits passing through a ring could indeed be quite harmful.
  3. Hello Escher When you would post a screenshot of one of your rockets it would be easier for us to find out where your mistakes might be. Otherwise we can just guess, because there are so many things you can do wrong.
  4. Alexander the Great totally obliterated Dschingis Khan in the final of the first French Open in 1891.
  5. You wouldn't have to calculate each object in the rings individually. That can be faked pretty easily. It would be sufficient to visualize the rings with a single two-dimensional, translucent plane as long as a vessel is away, and when a vessel is close enough to the ring that collisions are possible, you randomly spawn some asteroids at a radius of a few km and remove them when they leave the attention radius around the vessel. Just like terrain scatters are handled, but mobile and with collision.
  6. Rule number one of the scientific method: You never know that something exist. You only have a model which is consistent with your observations and postulates the existence of something. Economical exploitation of the oorth cloud is unlikely, considering that its distance from the sun is several thousand AU. Also, its metallicity is hypothesed to be quite low.
  7. Whenever a project resorts to crowd funding for financial backing, it usually means that the project can't get capital the usual way. There is usually a reason why no venture capitalist trusts them. Either the makers lack experience or it's a very unusual project where nobody can say if it will be successful or not. You have to be aware that such a high-risk project might not run as smoothly as expected. Please don't get me wrong. I think crowd funding is a wonderful new concept. By distributing the risk of a venture on thousands of people it becomes possible to make projects which would never happen otherwise. But you have to be aware that when you back a crowd-funded project, that you are not a customer. You are an investor betting money on a risky project. When you want to be sure that you get what you pay for, be patient and wait until the project is finished, and then buy the product like everyone else.
  8. One factor which makes KSP a lot easier than real life is the total lack of atmospheric re-entry heat. In real-life, atmospheric reentry is one of the most dangerous phases of a space mission. Special care must be taken to ensure that a vessel is capable of surviving re-entry and the reentry vector has to be planned properly. In KSP however it's totally harmless.
  9. Your feeling is right. This poll is created approximately once per month. But it seems like the forum crash ate most of them.
  10. It works for me, but only from time to time. Often I only get the "Set as target" popup or change to a different object on a similar orbit.
  11. According to the wiki article, the engine is currently in development, the rest is still a dream waiting for funding. And if it will be practical can't be said before it actually flies.
  12. Many rockets used to have fins, but they fell out of favor because modern computers can stabilize a rocket faster and more efficiently using active thrusters. Early versions of the Ariane rockets also had fins (version 1-3), but they were dropped somewhere in the 90s (the ariane 4 has models with and without fins, the ariane 5 has no fins).
  13. I have no screenshots of it unfortunately, but one time I sent a probe carrier to Jool with one probe for each moon and I juggled them all simultaneously. It was quite challenging to do that. I constantly had to compare the time until specific maneuver nodes or rendezvous points to make sure I don't miss one while waiting for the other. And then suddenly probes on eccentric orbits had unexpected encounters with other moons changing their orbits and I had to react accordingly. It was difficult, but very rewarding because I learned a lot about the Joolian moons.
  14. The question is: how do you actually define gamer? Is a gamer anyone who touched a video game in the last year? Someone who spends every wake moment playing video games? Something in between? Is it a label of self-identification, a lifestyle or a state of mind?
  15. What exactly does this setting actually do?
  16. Are you sure that the people you reach on this forum are a representative sample group? I think that those people interested in KSP aren't really typical gamers.
  17. In my opinion: The worst Windows version from a technical standpoint was Windows ME. The worst Windows version from an UI standpoint is Windows 8.
  18. Maybe a better question would be: Why is the Bermuda triangle such a safe place to travel? Why do less planes and ships disappear in the Bermuda triangle than would statistically be expected? - Do methane bubbles from the sea surface create better aerodynamic conditions? - Do angels from heaven guide lost travelers to their destinations? Or are it the ghosts of dead sailors who died after living a long and prosperous life financed by their travels through the Bermuda triangle? - Or are it aliens who noticed the significance of the Bermuda triangle for our economy and want to support our development as a species by protecting it from disasters? There is clearly something there we are not supposed to know...
  19. Here is an interesting video. Someone updating from every single version of windows, from 1 to 7. Surprisingly, it worked:
  20. When you buy a bundle with multiple games and you already own one of the games, you can trade the extra copy to someone else. I wouldn't know of a way to trade a game you bought normally (unless, of course, you bought it as a gift). Some games also have the option to buy multiple copies at a discount which you can then trade to others.
  21. Oh, you replayed my tutorial.
  22. Am I the only one who thinks that the Antares might be one of the most ugly rockets ever built?
