Kerbal Airliner challenge
Bothersome replied to Penguinhero's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
I've got a plane that get carry 30 Kerbals as shown in the screen shot. 24 passengers, 2 stewartres, 1 flight engineer, 1 reparman (for the wheels), 1 co-pilot, and 1 pilot. The screenshot is hard to see all the seats but they are all there. It might not qualify all the rules of the competition, but It works for me for transferring Kerbals around (cheaply). -
Not only that, they are Guidelines not rules. When I posted my 18 orange tanks to space challenge I knew it didn't have score system. So? I didn't want one. But people want to give flak over it anyway. So, If I can't post the challenge the way I want it, then I won't bother posting any at all and you all can just have those dumb ones all day long.

Just looked on Steam best seller list.. KSP is in third spot. PA is forth. Skyrim is 6th. Not bad.

Lowest Orbit You Have Ever Seen Or Gotten To?
Bothersome replied to irichey25's topic in KSP1 Discussion
I snapshot this photo some time ago. Thought it might fit in this challenge. Might not be the lowest but it's pretty low. Yes, those are the lights shining onto the surface of the Mun as it orbits around it. The orbit was near perfect circle too btw. -
Well, I guess the gig is up. You guys already knew about the infinite glide bug. But I just found out about it today by my brother's discovery of a plane that just kept wanting to fly when he was trying to land. Then upon futher study, we found out what was causing it. Now we're both into building more planes that can fly anywhere. Mostly for Laythe missions. But I didn't see the other thread before I posted this challenge. When I posted it I really thought we were the only ones that knew of it... Oh well bubbles burst. I did make a really good looking plane too just for show.

OK boys and girls, I got a new challenge for ya that will pull your hair. Rules: 1. MUST be stock parts only. You can have mods intalled but must not affect the craft stucture or capabilities. 2. Must NOT use any outside force to get it into the air. 3. Must be able to glide or fly all the way around Kerbin if needed. You do not have to prove you did it. Just show me that you can build and fly a plane that would be able to do it. 4. Must not go into space. No rockets allowed other than getting craft into the air. 5. No cheating with any editors or anything that is not in spirit of the competition. Bunus: 1. Build it so you drive it like a car. 2. Able to climb 20 degree slopes. 3. Vehicle is complete from takeoff to landing (no parts discarded). Now, once again, I would not ask of you anything I could not do myself so.. Here's mine. Enjoy the challenge.

OK, here is one of mine... I have another ship that is bit smaller but didn't take as many photos of the different stages. These ships were originally designed for Laythe return missions.
-
Here is my first Duna Landing. These Kerbals "volunteered" to be the first when it was determined that a return trip was not going to be possible. However, upon landing and review of the fuel situation, it would have been possible to return to orbit and redock to the transport ship. However, the car transport would not have enough fuel to go back down to Duna to leave the car on the surface for further remote study. So the return mission was abandoned. Four Kerbals went on this mission but only two could volunteer to be first to set foot on another world. So this honor goes to Richbas Kerman and Nadgan Kerman for their heroic patronage in helping Kerbalkind find its way into space. Car with lander and transport ship after dumping the RCS fuel module (which later was determined to be a mistake). Car on decent for aerobrake and landing. Duna Car 1 on surface of Duna with lander. Slight mishap but not a problem as it is not going to re-attach anyway. Better designs came along after V0.20 was released but this car was already in flight from 0.19 along with the default flag.

Challenge 18 Orange Tanks to Orbit
Bothersome replied to Bothersome's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
I didn't use any MechJeb or any other mods to get it to orbit. It also didn't take 3 hours of my time to get it there either. I'd say only about 15 minutes. Those blank Icons are from the booster and rocket disconnects that I used. These are not the explosive versions. These are the ones that simply "let go" but stay on the buster/tank/whatever they are holding. Even though they were placed onto the inner item. I don't know why the icons are blank. Maybe a bug in the game still. Basically, when I build a rocket system, I build one unit, then select the number copies I want and then remove it from the side, and replace it back but this time the copies are put on. This way, I can get in there and place struts where I need them without the other stuff getting in the way of the view. There are some keys that aren't documented anywhere. Like holding Alt down then then clicking on something (while in VAB) will make a copy of what you clicked. One of the nice things about this challenge is that once you've "completed it" and if you were smart and put docking port on it, then you can use it as a refueler station. Which is why I originally done it to begin with. You don't need a score, it's just a see if you can kind of thing. Are you a part of that group "that can"? Just like the climbers of Mt. Everest. Do they keep record of who climbed the highest on Everest? The top is the top. -
So quit depending on mods. The stock game has enough stuff in it to make it fun. In fact, most of the fun is in the challenge to overcome the problems without it being handed to you.

SUCCESS! and a little troubleshooting needed
Bothersome replied to mellojoe's topic in KSP1 Mission Reports
You can toggle the antennas to open and close again if you have them programmed to do so on a key command. To get them to close, or open again you have to go back to the tracking center then back to your craft/station/whatever, then issue the command again. I don't know if it's a bug or a feature. -
Having trouble figuring out how to get my rover up to the Mun.
Bothersome replied to sadron's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Here is a picture of my normal moon/planet explorer quite a few iterations ago. Now I have a more universal docking package and Ion drive engines to get it to pretty much anywhere I want it without the use of extra pushers if I so desire. I don't have a current picture of it in it's current build but here is a picture of an older version that went to Minmus... But basically it's a car with a transport system overhead. This way you can undock the car and go drive around. When you get done, you pull under the transport and reconnect to the docking port. Done by lowering the landing legs to raise the car. But you basically get the idea of how from the photo. One thing to note about these type vehicles, laziness will eat your lunch here. Do it right and don't get lazy in the engineering. -
Well, after analyzing the UFO's computer data and flight charts it looks like they were looking for something. So our engineering officer kindof sortof figured out in a round about way that they were trying to get to some southern place on the Mun. After heading out and searching about for about 6 hours, a faint hum was detected in some hole and was investigated. Not much was learned but when Newlin Kerman touched it (agaist the others recommending him not do that), he started talking in some weird language and yabbering about "the answer to life, the universe, and everything." Like anyone would be interested in that sort of stuff?!?... We asked him about some important stuff like what the optimum temparature for baking muffins would be, but he had no useful answers. Like I said in my report. No useful information gained here. P.S. we did get a photo though...

I think you not seeing a good use for such an engine. These are great for use when docking craft. Especially when driving a larger craft. They can save you tons of RCS fuel if used correctly. Of course, once you get proficient with the docking process, then they become more or less useless again.
-
Here is a Kerbal team after investigating another UFO crash on the Mun. After collecting samples of some Lego looking blocks that assemble themselves into what looks like a toy spider about 35cm long... They thought they would check out one other site and cross the south pole before heading back to Kerbin. UFO found and investigated. Lego samples stored for further study back at Kerbin. The place definately looks alien to me. Driving up to the south pole. Flag planted at South Pole. View from above Mun South Pole.

Challenge 18 Orange Tanks to Orbit
Bothersome replied to Bothersome's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
Yeah that's pretty amazing space wheels you got there. From what I can gather from the screen shots, you used the fuel in the tanks to get it to orbit. Mine are launched from Kerbin and to orbit FULL. No fuel used from the orange tanks. My brother has just beat my record by putting 73169 units of liquid fuel into a 74K orbit. But, he didn't use orange tanks so, he don't qualify. -
Challenge 18 Orange Tanks to Orbit
Bothersome replied to Bothersome's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
I think it more likely you don't comprehend the scale of the problem. So you blame your computer instead. You THINK you can do it easily, yet you're not willing to try because it might PROVE to be difficult. At least, that's MY thinking. -
Challenge 18 Orange Tanks to Orbit
Bothersome replied to Bothersome's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
John, it's 775 tons according to the map info. 343 parts. kahlzun, if you must use mechjeb then do so. I didn't use it (no mods installed here). If you need it to do the easy part of flying the ship, then use it. But I think I can confidently say, that if you manage to engineer such a craft, the flying is gonna be the easy part. -
Challenge 18 Orange Tanks to Orbit
Bothersome replied to Bothersome's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
Well, you can do that, but if you want some respect for meeting the challenge, I'd suggest you try not skirt through a loop hole. Just do it, or move on. The challenge is an engineering test. Do you have what it takes? -
Challenge 18 Orange Tanks to Orbit
Bothersome replied to Bothersome's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
Well, there is no rule saying it had to be done in real time. So it runs a little slow. It can still be done on slower computers can't it? It's an engineering challenge more than a flight challenge. If you can build it, you prolly can fly it. -
Challenge get 18 Orange fuel tanks to orbit Kerbin. Rules: 1. Stock parts only. 2. No refueling in space, must launch all tanks to space in one go. 3. No computer assisted piloting except SAS or ASAS. Now, I wouldn't ask any of you to do something I couldn't so... Here is mine... That's 4532 tons held together by 1719 parts (includes 16 towers). 53069 units of liquid fuel in orbit. Not trying to create a King of Space, but,... you know..

SSTOs! Post your pictures here~
Bothersome replied to KissSh0t's topic in KSP1 The Spacecraft Exchange
Here is last SSTO ship that I've made. This one uses jets and rockets to obtain orbit. Usually has enough fuel in orbit to get to a refueling station too. The purpose for this ship is for a future Lathe return Kerbals home mission. Oh, the screenies... -
Most of it is flat ice sheet. Towards land (westward if looking at KSC straight down), is some hilly areas. Aparently it's snow/ice on land there. It should be a great place to test your rocket cars... However, you need to test your wheels for greater then 60m/s at the airport first. The airplane wheels are the only ones that I know of that will go faster than 60 without popping.

I made another ship using the 2 man lander module (the old one). But when I'm on Kerbin, and doing a test for ladder access, My Kerbals fall to the ground as soon as you click on EVA. They are not holding onto the ladder at the pod any more. And yes, I've built the ship right. I can take a picture if you insist. Anyone else having this problem?
