I have applied damien667's patch successfully (although the mangled whitespace forced me to do it manually) and can confirm that it works on Arch Linux 64bit and fixes the annoying can't-use-subdirectories issue. Here's the zip file hosted on Dropbox: The updated source is inside the zip just like original. Remeber, unpack this directly into GameData folder just like explained above !!!
