You mean you don't have a backup already? You should probably get one of those anyway. If you're game to upgrade the OS without a backup, you're braver than I.

The Linux Thread!
steve_v replied to sal_vager's topic in KSP1 Technical Support (PC, unmodded installs)
What does 'dmesg' produce regarding the drive after you plug it in? Example from ordinary old "thumb drive": Fri Aug 7 21:57:32 2015 usb 2-1: new SuperSpeed USB device number 3 using xhci_hcd Fri Aug 7 21:57:32 2015 usb 2-1: New USB device found, idVendor=1f75, idProduct=0902 Fri Aug 7 21:57:32 2015 usb 2-1: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=3 Fri Aug 7 21:57:32 2015 usb 2-1: Product: PenDrive Fri Aug 7 21:57:32 2015 usb 2-1: Manufacturer: Innostor Fri Aug 7 21:57:32 2015 usb 2-1: SerialNumber: 0902100000000000000000000058 Fri Aug 7 21:57:32 2015 usb-storage 2-1:1.0: USB Mass Storage device detected Fri Aug 7 21:57:32 2015 scsi10 : usb-storage 2-1:1.0 [B]<--- Detected as mass-storage, accessible as a standard SCSI drive.[/B] Fri Aug 7 21:57:33 2015 scsi 10:0:0:0: Direct-Access Innostor Innostor 1.00 PQ: 0 ANSI: 5 Fri Aug 7 21:57:33 2015 sd 10:0:0:0: Attached scsi generic sg8 type 0 Fri Aug 7 21:57:33 2015 sd 10:0:0:0: [sdh] 32292864 512-byte logical blocks: (16.5 GB/15.3 GiB) Fri Aug 7 21:57:33 2015 sd 10:0:0:0: [sdh] Write Protect is off Fri Aug 7 21:57:33 2015 sd 10:0:0:0: [sdh] Mode Sense: 03 00 00 00 Fri Aug 7 21:57:33 2015 sd 10:0:0:0: [sdh] No Caching mode page found Fri Aug 7 21:57:33 2015 sd 10:0:0:0: [sdh] Assuming drive cache: write through Fri Aug 7 21:57:33 2015 sdh: sdh1 [B]<--- Here is the disk (/dev/sdh) and partition (/dev/sdh1) same as a standard hard disk, can be used as such.[/B] Fri Aug 7 21:57:33 2015 sd 10:0:0:0: [sdh] Attached SCSI removable disk Since this is treated as an ordinary SCSI disk drive, the installer will happily install to it. You can also get more information with 'lsusb'. 'lsusb -t' for example will show the device hierarchy, including the driver in use, 'lsusb -v' will dump a whole lot of info you probably don't need etc. My guess is that the disk is presenting itself as something other than USB mass-storage, but I can't find any information on that device in a language I can read. So I dunno. Post the relevant dmesg output and someone might have seen one before. Maybe. -
Flash is one of my pet hates. Horrible piece of software. There's a wrapper to use chromes "pepper flash" plugin with firefox on GNU/Linux... Dunno about Win 10 though. It's better than adobes offering, but flash is still pretty nasty IMO.

Game Refuses to Load Properly
steve_v replied to CaelumEtAstra's topic in KSP1 Technical Support (PC, modded installs)
There was an issue with PNG textures a while back, but I was under the impression it was fixed... It'd be easy enough to test though, just install ActiveTextureManagement - it'll convert the PNGs to DDS. -
Performance issues and glitch
steve_v replied to phoda's topic in KSP1 Technical Support (PC, modded installs)
Both are required for AntennaRange to function correctly.I'd strongly suggest that you try removing MechJeb, even if just as a test... It's by far the biggest contributor to the stutter IME. -
Game Refuses to Load Properly
steve_v replied to CaelumEtAstra's topic in KSP1 Technical Support (PC, modded installs)
KSP on GNU/Linux doesn't generate 'output.log', it's '~/.config/unity3d/Squad/Kerbal Space Program/Player.log' and I assure you it's there. As for the actual problem... It'd be easier with a proper log, but: I see a bunch of "NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object FlightGlobals.get_Vessels () WhitecatIndustries.UI.FixedUpdate ()" What is WhitecatIndustries? does it load if you remove it? I see you are running KWRocketry - it's not updated for 1.0.4, do you have the patches? I see B9 Aerospace in there, and I'm sure that's not officially updated for 1.0.4 either. The log ends loading textures from EVE, try ditching that first? Your "mod list" link leads to: "Invalid Blog specified. If you followed a valid link, please notify the administrator", so ??. Other than that, there's nothing obvious in that (limited) log that I can see so you may well have to do this the hard way and remove mods a few at a time until it works. -
Swapping out the stock browser for Firefox was step 1, minutes after getting the device.
-
Seriously? Goodbye Micro$oft. Burn in hell.
-
Yeah, and that's only the short list. StockBugfixModules helps with the kerbal vs. ladder ejection issue, among other things. This game desperately needs a bugfixing & performance pass. I get that it's supposed to be slightly goofy, but the number of bugs and physics glitches is still increasing with each patch, and it's getting pretty intolerable.

Argh, seems I've misplaced my crystal ball again Have a look at this, then post the required information.

Performance issues and glitch
steve_v replied to phoda's topic in KSP1 Technical Support (PC, modded installs)
The behaviour of ragdolled kerbals is weird and unpredictable, probably a bug. The freezing is most likely MechJeb, SCANSAT, or some other calculation/garbage intensive mod... Though I'm pretty sure it's just exacerbating an underlying problem in the game engine. Look here for more on this. Either that or, as ColKlonk suggests, something is spamming the log. Have a look in said logfile, or pull it up in-game with the debug menu. A heap of exceptions in the log usually indicates that there's something up with a mod... and should be investigated further. Take a peek. - - - Updated - - - -nolog -
There is actually an issue specific to female kerbals when ragdolled... See Ferram4s comment here. In other words, yay, more bugs.

What's the glitchiest that game you ever played?
steve_v replied to Ethanadams's topic in The Lounge
Seems 'tis the CD version I remember, I've actually been playing The Ur-Quan Masters port again recently. It's a damn fine game, seems I missed out on all the early bugs -
All true, but I'd still rather not willingly spill all my data to Google. The likes of stagefright are bugs, Googles (and now MS too, it seems) constant datamining is an intentional anti-feature as far as I am concerned, and one I'd rather not have, even if it does make some things more convenient. A kernel level firewall (e.g. iptables) also goes a fair way towards preventing apps (and potentially even the Android VM) from doing things they shouldn't. I'd also consider "greener pastures", if I could see any hereabouts. I'm really not convinced MS or Apple are any better. Of course, if you really want to go tinfoil hat, it's not the phone OS or apps you should be concerned about... It's the firmware on the radio chipset. The best defence, IMO, against both intentional and unintentional privacy leaks is information... knowing what (and whose) code is actually running and what security flaws it may have. - - - Updated - - - Regarding stagefright, it's already been patched by both Google and CyanogenMod (possibly other vendors also). Getting the update out might be more interesting though. In the mean time, stagefright (and HW media decoding ) can be disabled fairly easily. If you're slightly less concerned, AFAIK MMS is the only vector currently in the wild... so turn off auto retrieval.
-
Likewise. Meh, I sideload all my apps, they're all open source and vetted by... well, me. I'll take "device under my control" over "one click convenient" any day. If you really need those play store only apps, there are ways.

MAJOR Heating Bug
steve_v replied to davidy12's topic in KSP1 Technical Support (PC, modded installs)
The transition from stock to FAR isn't the re-learning of aerodynamics it once was, now that stock isn't totally ridiculous. FAR does seem to exacerbate the heating bug, but there's word of a partial workaround for it in the latest release, and DRE (lower thermal conductivity for the sake of harder) actually helps with the instability. As far as I can see so far FAR + DRE is now slightly less likely to explode than stock... Still really needs to be fixed on Squads end though. -
Mine isn't Android/AOSP without all the google tripe isn't actually that bad.

steve_v replied to Ethanadams's topic in The Lounge
So you're saying that the quality of Squads product shouldn't reflect on them, because they chose to use a buggy engine? I'm not buying it. There are also plenty of bugs that are not Unity issues. If your shiny new car falls apart, do you go complaining to the manufacturer you purchased it from or the subcontractor who pressed the body panels? Not saying that KSP has bugs doesn't make them go away either. -
Weird Craft Explosion
steve_v replied to Voyager275's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
What's the launch TWR of that beastie? looks like you have rather a lot of thrust in the first stage, it might simply be crushing a decoupler further up the stack. 15Gs is a fair bit after all. And yeah, that instability in the new thermal system really needs to be fixed ASAP. There are plenty of reports on the forums, but little progress on the bugtracker. Yet another new "feature" horribly buggy on launch day and subsequently ignored. Not impressed Squad. -
I'll just drop my usual response to this kind of thing: If it sounds too good to be true, and you actually have to hunt for some proper scientific evidence... It's too good to be true. My bet is on 99.8% snake oil with a dash of plausible sounding ingredients that are unlikely to be researched by the average customer. And equally unlikely to do anything useful. IME, the only true weight loss formula is controlling ones energy budget - Consume less, use more. i.e. Thermodynamics (as far as can be applied to biology). - - - Updated - - - It really infuriates me that this BS is permitted to be sold, it's nothing but preying on the gullible and uninformed. And yet the mostly unregulated online market is full of it.

IME (going back to Win 3.11) with MS, there's always a catch. If I ever update my games partition, it'll be at least a major version behind the current Windows offering.
