Well, there was a reason I called it "Power" during the design stage I'll admit that I basically just created that tail section and cargobay, and then just slapped on stuff around that to make it flyable. First on the agenda was to have some nacelles away from the main fuselage to make it stable on the runway, and when I had done that I was up into such a large mass that I felt like I had to spam engines. I've been using the old rule of thumb to have atleast one engine per 10t, which might very admittedly be outdated now with how the new jet engines handle. With the wings I tried to keep each heavy part supported by a lifting surface to avoid aerodynamic destruction. I think I tend to forget that aircraft should be streamlined :'D But is this what you say about the different intakes true, or just speculation? I haven't found much information on what sets them apart, and as of now I just use the ram intakes because they look better Also, wow, 45t with 130t? That's quite the achievement! Was that with stock parts or mods?

I've always had a fascination with huge SSTO's since the first time I started making them. It's been about the only thing I do in KSP. And I've created alot of huge behemoths. I've stuck to only stock parts and did use FAR before 1.0. This is my latest creation. Stock with Engineer and Action groups extended. No cheats, no clipping. The SCI Levo. A SSTO capable of taking 45t out into orbit. It's 351t at launch with the payload. Consists of 387 parts, of whom 38 are RAPIERS and 4 are NERVA's. It has full RCS maneuverability, which is needed during the insertion stage for extra control authority. Has detachable front wings to alter the CoL and make reentry possible. Landing is tough, with the plane unable to land on uneven terrain in more than -2m/s in vertical velocity. I don't think you can land it if it's full of fuel. .

Did this: Interplanetary SSTO aircraft carrier. Takes 10 small jet planes with VTOL capability to about everywhere in the Kerbin system. -

So I'm member of this group of dedicated SSTO builders and one of the guys ask for a dropship that can carry 10 kerbals to atleast LKO and drop them. I thought I could do better than a simple dropship so I created a SSTO interplanetary aircraft carrier carrying 10 small jet planes with VTOL capability. Pure stock except MJ and Engineer. -
Post your terrible, but cool looking rockets/planes

Tried a SR-71 Blackbird replica a while ago, but it ended up too structurally unstable and it just spins out of control. Ain't that cool really. -

Indeed it is, indeed it is... How many engines did you need for that? o.o -

Yeah, I gotta work on building smaller less complex crafts the next time. Still wish the engine was more optimized though, would be a wonder to have decent fps for once xD -

Hey SofusRud love that cargobay solution (Y) Got a similar in mine, only mine has the exit in the back. Allow me to announce my WAAAY too heavy SSTO Transport. This was originally meant to able to support interplanetary travel, but I only managed to get it to orbit. The design is tested with landing and the truck inside can both drive in and out. I know that if I add more intakes(abuse) then I might be able to get it to other planets, but I'm capped by the part count as it is. 856 parts does not give a good fps... Anyway, spec time: Weight: 210t Crew capacity: 4 Part count: 856 Engines: 16 Turbojets, Roof at 25KM 2 Skipper 4 NERVA Intakes: 74 Payload: around 37t Range: Kerbin Orbit (estimated 150/150 max) Mods: Engineer and Mechjeb, rest stock -

So I told you guys I'd update my post with my BSG Galactica replica, and I totally forgot about it. Anyway, here's a prototype I've been working on. The project is unfortunately on hold atm due to school and my other hobbies. The plan is to create three separate crafts that I'd launch with a heavy lifter, and then assemble it in orbit. There might be a part count problem though. I'm suspecting it will come up to about 2000 parts... <a href="http://imgur.com/8FxMb6b"><img src="http://i.imgur.com/8FxMb6b.png" title="Hosted by imgur.com"/></a> <a href="http://imgur.com/HQa0OSP"><img src="http://i.imgur.com/HQa0OSP.png" title="Hosted by imgur.com"/></a> <a href="http://imgur.com/abk6iF1"><img src="http://i.imgur.com/abk6iF1.png" title="Hosted by imgur.com"/></a> -

Thanks! Flaps needed to achieve more lift. 140 tons needs a deal ._. Yep ^^ All stock, except mechjeb and engineer chip. And yes, prepare to spam struts! I'm looking forward to see it! Also, if you want som extra real challenge, make it SSTO cabable -

Thanks guys! Took me a little while And I really love these blended body wing designs katateochi! Btw, I made another SSTO, not exactly an "insane" design, and this will actually acheive LKO, but it looks cool ^^ Skylarker V6 Part count: 600 Specs: Engines: 12 Rapiers 12 Intakes 2 NERVAs Fuel: 2x jumbo plus some mk1 fuselage Range: Maybe Mun orbit with proper flying -

Tried a blended body design with two jumbo tanks as the main fuselage some days ago. Big, slow, and ineffective. It can reach orbit, but that's about it. I've scrapped trying to improve this design by now. I did an replica of the SR-71 Blackbird, conveniently named "Whitebird." It was supposed to be SSTO capable, but due to failed structural design it's far too fragile and just wriggles it's way out of control -
That's a slick looking transport. Holy damn, you gotta be the god of SSTO's! Hope you don't mind if I try to incorporate some of your design elements into my own. I'll make sure to credit you with any uploads tough. From a design perspective, I can easily see you tackle the situation very differently from me. Personally I just end up with a mk2 fuselage and tanks on the sides with engines behind, then cover it with wings and lift surfaces as well as making the wings themselves. Then I tweak it until I got an engine configuration that can take off, and provide enough delta-v to where I want to go. I guess this is the method most people do, and I would say it's a good method for small to mid sized SSTO's, but after that I'm not so sure anymore. And regarding our discussion about intakes and jets, yes I do see your point, and my opinion on intake 'abuse' has been changed. I'm tired of trying to tweak with so much to avoid it, especially since it isn't even realistic. I hope that in the future versions of the game they will add in Ram and Scram jet types, since those are the only type of engines that would be suitable to use on SSTO's for high altitude supersonic speeds. The fact that most of those jet's can't function without air being 'rammed'(hence the name) into them, is an interesting challenge I would very much like to try out.

I'm personally against intake abuse even though I know that KSP doesn't use a model for it that's realistic. After a little experimenting I've come to the conclusion that my current engine configuration is the most optimal, and I'm pretty sure I got enough delta v to get to Duna and back. However, since I suck at intercepting Duna, I'm always forced to do a brake burn(I'm hoping to achieve a PE so low I can aerobrake directly from Kerbin), this burn ends up with using up to much fuel and voila, I can't get back

When I learned to dock, I used around 6 hours, no kidding. Now I'm far too lazy and use mechjeb's autodock. It saves me for alot of frustration and time -

Had a similar problem myself, my solution in my designs have been to spam wings and lift surfaces. With enough lift you can get a plane with less than 1TWR to take off. Other than that you can add some more jet engines. Also having Mechjeb and using Smart A.S.S module so you can set a pitch at an exact value helps -
Thanks I actually wanted to use 6xNERVA's, but the TWR of those is less than ideal to break into orbit :/ I'm currently experimenting with different ascent parameters that might give me more DeltaV to use once in orbit, current record is of 2000m/s with an ISP of 443(that's 3600m/s using NERVA's). If the tutorial on the wikia page is legit, I might actually be able to travel to Duna, and back with that amount! I'll update my post as soon as I've managed it, and then I hope I'll escape the gate crashers list ^^

So I'm not sure about 'double-posting', but anyway here's mine: Made with stock parts, only exception being Mechjeb and Engineer Redux. No major clipping or air intake spamming. This is actually a SSTD(Single Stage To Duna) spaceplane, but does of course have capability to land on Kerbin as well if so is wished. I'm currently working on flight optimizations to allow a return trip. Lightning Bolt MK3 Landed on Duna Craft file and user manual (requires Mechjeb and Kerbal Engineer redux). The RAR archive includes the .craft file and an user manual for ascent. -
Hi guys, I present to you my SSTD(Single Stage To Duna) the Lightning Bolt MK3. Unfortunately it is not capable of returning to Kerbal on its own, but it might manage to make Duna orbit so I can just send a refueler. Someone with better rendezvous skills than me might be able to make the trip to and back Created using stock parts with the exception of Mechjeb and Engineer Redux. Little to no clipping(only some wings) and no spamming of air intakes. I wanted to do this as 'real' as I could within the limits of KSP. Information panels will be kept up to verify the trip. The ship is an excellent glider due to high amounts of wings used, so parachutes are not needed(only messed up when I tried with). It might take some patience to successfully land though. Parts: 279 Weight: 70t Jet Engine: 5 Aerospike Engine: 4 Nuclear Engine: 2 Intakes: 8 Cockpit: 1 Landing gear: 7 Docking port: 1(not used, just for added versatility) Take off: In flight: Note: The Delta velocity value will be incorrectly calculated the entire trip as it takes all the engines ISP into consideration, but most of the fuel is burned at an ISP of 800s. Injection burn: Circularized: Injection to Kerbol orbit: On Duna rendezvous course: Duna intercept: Aerobraking: Note: Sorry for forgetting to activate the resource menu, turned itself off after a quickload, flight engineer is still there to verify though. Landing in darkness: Moment of truth: Success! So that's it! Sorry for the amount of pictures. And, I know the ship doesn't land on Kerbin, but I really wanted to make it go to Duna. Hope you'll show some mercy! If necessary I'll make the ship go into orbit and land on Kerbin again. Craft file and user manual (requires Mechjeb and Kerbal Engineer redux). The RAR archive includes the .craft file and an user manual for ascent.

KIDI- Kerbal Interplanetary Defence Initiative
Lazer Cut replied to sodopro's topic in KSP1 The Spacecraft Exchange
I made this just for fun, with little thought to actual tactical use. If you want, you can think of it as cheap and easy to manufacture missile boat, and there's always the option to add some structural plates to cover the fuel tanks. -

Lazer Cut replied to sodopro's topic in KSP1 The Spacecraft Exchange
So i posted this in another weapons thread, but that suddenly disappeared so I'll post it here as well Most people think Kerbals to be a peaceful(while slightly suicidal) race, but there's an exception to every stereotype. These dark (green?) creatures want to see stuff blow up, the means of doing so is highly discussed, but most agree that a solid fuel booster rocket should do some decent damage. Pretty simple design. Made with stock parts (exception: mechjeb, engineer redux) and launched with a lifter, 4 rocket capacity, 7000m/s delta-v range. Missiles are controllable Presenting the generic Kerbal Missile Frigate: Firing: -

Well, maybe not 250 hours of 'active' playing, but my computer has been running the game for around so long. I guess that I maybe cheated a little bit, as it's a known case for me to have it running on my other monitor while I'm playing LoL on the main x) Just saw a post with a dude having one, but that involved alot of clipping and spamming of air intakes. Meh, I feel like doing that is kind of cheating, but it's an achievement anyway. SSTD(Single Stage To Destination?), would have been so cool to make! Read multiple places that KSP is not multi-threaded, and is not effectively using GPU's. Of course, it might be possible that some mods are slowing me down, heard some rumors about the subassembly mod doing that. But yeah, I'm working on optimizations, I just really wanted to make a Battlestar Galactica replica with a hull(structural plates), but to make it 'scale' I had to dock the parts(600+ parts) together, and well, that was where my fps broke.
