You can always transfer the .craft.

Each communicator has different communication times but more or less power usage, and it doesnt matter if you do a long stream of data or not. Hope this helps!

It says on the wiki that theirs an invisible wall some point above kerbol. As to why there's no heat damage, maybe they just havent implemented it yet.
