Deploy those chutes soon as you're in the atmosphere, they will work to slow you from orbital velocities with the drag from the atmosphere to get you to terminal velocity quicker. It's a thin atmosphere so depending on your lander's weight, you may to have a partially powered descent to achieve "soft landing". -

Interesting ideas! Too bad Jeb is already lost I will continue testing emergency retrieval vehicles to avoid another lost Kerbalnaught. The Union of Rogue Kerbalnaughts has threatened to strike if another Kerbal is launched onto an intergalactic trajectory. Wooow that pic. I hope you sent your best Xeno erradicating SSTO with lots of ammo. -

Thanks so much for your help guys. A few notes on your suggestions. LV-N staging was incorrect, that was a temp setting to allow for testing w/o blowing up the first pair of asparagus tanks with nuclear exhaust. LV-N are for interplanatary flight only, the poodle was included for emergency maneuvres and orbital circularization but won't be the primary drive. Don't drop the LV-Ns! Solar action group is number 4 The craft is designed for orbital refueling at my Fuel Depot SS I solved some of the wobble issues by disabling torque on all of the probe cores and bracing the LV-N's better SRV's #4...? I dont get this one. EDIT: I see, you're talking RCS The battery pack was out of position as I was moving things around to try and nail down the culprit of spontaneous disassembly. Does overheating affect ISP? I will probly rework the mounting of the LV-N's so they don't have decouplers. That should avoid some complications. I was thinking of deleting the skipper all together and just toting the fuel with the LV-N, what do you think? If you'd like I'll share the reworked craft after more testing. -

Ok I think I'm closing in on the cause. I just removed the 3 man pod and used a mk2 lander can. Got into orbit first launch. Going to add some weight to determine if it's the 3man pod or the additional 1.5t that was the cause. -

Looks good up there! You just throttled up and floored it? It may not be designed suitably yet as I haven't even gotten it past 6900 yet. If you can just fly it up without issues it must be something besides compression failure. EDIT: I see you did throttle down. Did you go for orbital? It's designed to refuel at my Fuel Depot space station before the Jool excursion. -

SRV, I'll email you the file if you'd like. I'm a total nub at this file sharing thing. I'm going to remove the RCS tanks and try again tomorrow. I think you can pm me the email if you'd like. Also if you just click and drag you can copy the file text without line numbers. -
I was wondering the same. Should I just give up on my current career mode? Just want to know asap so I don't waste any time as Steam will auto update for me.

Hitting 'f' before Jeb goes splat? I guess the answer is I didn't plan on it and that's why it wasn't a feasible plan in the first place Maybe KSP did me a favor. -

So soda says basically "bring lots of dv and do it the long way" I'm considering an ion powered external control seat delivered by a large fast rocket that will establish the kerbol orbit. Well, KSP appears to have saved me from this issue. When swapping to the ship in question KSP esploded it and launched it onto an interstellar trajectory that is perpendicular to the plane of the Kerbol system. I.e. I've seen a few different ideas on how to rescue from being stranded in Kerbolcentric orbit. I'm trying to work in the realm of reality so I'd like to attempt a rescue that doesn't take 2 years to coordinate. My plan is to grab Jeb while he is at Ap in a highly elliptical orbit from a circular orbit at the same altitude. Imagine a Kerbin like orbit around Kerbol intersecting a comet like elliptical orbit. I anticipate two main issues. -Plotting the intercept -EVA in this very short window. My initial plan is to fiddle until I come up with an intercept of less than 200m then go EVA a bit before Ap so that I can use approach time and time on Ap for the intercept. Jeb's getting lonely out there and his ship is running out of snacks! Is this even feasible? EDIT: We've lost Jeb, while 'switch(ing) to' the ship it esploded and Jeb is now somewhere in Interstellar space.

reaching jool's moons in one go

I'm working out the kinks on a Jool Probe Carrier right now. It has 4 ion probes, 2 with parachutes, 4 liquid fuel probes (for powered descent) and all probes have the 4 main science sensors. I'm not sure how many bodies are in the Jool system as I try not to use the wiki too much so I'm bringing 2 variations of 2 different probes for a total of 4 configurations. The Kerbaled Carrier ship will aerobrake into an elliptical Jool orbit and will deploy the probes from Ap after planning the best approaches. Ion powered probes without chutes will head to low mass non atmospheric bodies, ion drives with chutes will head to high mass atmospheric bodies. Power descent probes (liquid fuel) will be deployed to high mass non atmospheric bodies or low mass atmospheric bodies. EDIT: I will probly be sending at least a few of the probes out while traveling to the encounter. This will allow the Ion probes to travel more efficiently to highly inclined or highly elliptical orbits of Jool's moons. Primary Kerbaled carrier ship will have the full array of science while the probes only carry the 4 small sensors. Carrier is powered by a skipper and two nuclear engines. Once i get the bugs worked out and do the mission (probly tomorrow the 5th) I'll update if you'd like. -

I will post a .craft file at lunch today. I'm not using any mod parts in this career and I've removed all non-stock plugins. As far as I can tell obj_base isn't affected by any of the mod parts I do have installed. I think some legacy KW parts are still in my parts bin and the Mapsat scanner, Kethane is still installed as well. The explosion comes about 20seconds into my 2nd stage. Timing indicates the explosion is not staging related. I've considered compression failure so I tried throttling back and got upto 6900m. Think we may be onto something there. Pics and .craft file soon. Thanks for all the ideas. Edit: SRV, what does f3 report say when you induce the compression failure? -

Closed and reopened game already, no effect. Stripping the ship part by part to try and rule out construction issues. Obj_base file seems suspect. -

Ok, I've reloaded. Warped a wide range of different times. Days, weeks, months. I've loaded a quicksave and a normal save. I've reworked the ship a few times as well. Not really sure what the solution here is. -

When I hit f3 it says "such and such collided with obj_base". Apparently obj_base is the white pad under the water tower from what I can find. Going to try warping a week and launching into different planar orbits to see wtf is happening. -
I have this issue but when launching from the pad I hit obj_base at 6100 to 6300 feet. Any idea what to do to help?

Nope, tried 3 or 4 different methods and it's still exploding into obj-base at 6100 to 6300 meters. -

Interesting, I've built a complicated ship but I was careful about clipping. I'll see if I can get your method to work and review the ship for collision issues. -
My rocket will blow up every time I build a big fancy rocket. Just finished designing my Jool probe carrier and can't get it over 6100m. Crash report says "such and such collided with obj_base" Halp? UPDATE: Found the 3 man capsule part to be the issue, after replacing it with a mk2 lander can I can orbit the ship. Still not sure why the 3 man capsule is the issue. It has higher durability and heat resistance and less drag. Going to replace the part file and see if that cures it.

Hey all! Just landed my rover assembly on the Mun and had a few glitches that are making my life hell. Hoping some of you have a fix. Firstly I had to quickload and the connector broke off the winch during loading screen, now i have a rover with a useless winch. The second is when I set my other rover to dock some crazy phantom forces spin my rover off into eternity unless I use warp. Warp seems to stop the movement but renders the rover immovable. Very strange happenings indeed.

Wooow, I rolled Kerbaled rover grand tour on a 40k budget. This is gonna be epic. Edit- just read the above poster, now i wonder how random this number generator is....
