If you're trying to come at something horizontally (to dock?), instead of legs, use wheels. Then you can land close and drive to it.

After I accomplish something in KSP, I like to check up on any timed event (launch window, rendezvous, departure, etc) I have before logging out. I do this instead of fast forwarding days, and may have multiple missions going on at once. I had just completed a mission I waited quite a while for at Duna and docked everything to wait for the return trip back (160 days, bleh), so I went back through to update my events. Checked my launch windows, then decided to check on timing for my probe that was headed to Jool. The second I select and switch to it, BOOM, it goes up like a roman candle, pieces floating around everywhere. Would this be the kraken I've been hearing about? Pertinent info: I haven't flown anything beyond Duna (besides this probe) at this point. There was no debris that I had left out in space that would have run into it (I actually build my craft to avoid debris, including staging).

I have a pair of rovers on the Mun that have worked out OK for me so far, as long as I don't try to race them. - outer structure should be all high impact pieces, like steel plates and steel beams - I have the tough landing gear on a recessed area (protected by steel plating) on top of my rover in case it does flip. A few other things I've found to be helpful when driving a rover. I'm assuming a four-wheel rover is used. - turn off steering in the back two tires so it handles more like a car - disable the brakes in the front tires so it doesn't nose and flip when braking For some reason, I had to turn off the motor in the back wheels on the Mun; they were pushing with more power than the front. There could be something a bit off in my rover design, but it works so I'm not complaining.

I was curious to know where the image from the Start screen in KSP might be on the Mun? I like how flat it is, and where Kerbin is in the background.
