A followup to my earlier post, where I mentioned Bungie's Marathon Trilogy. There are lots of good ones, several already mentioned in this thread. Here are more (if I didn't miss them mentioned earlier): the Journeyman Project and Clive Barker's Undying. And another set of Bungie games: the Myth series and Oni. Actually this 10 minute video shows gameplay from 20 years of ALL Bungie's games, from perhaps unfamiliar to familiar:

Thanks for the response, Fractal_UK. I'd somehow lost the context of a nuclear jet merely heating the native air (mostly nitrogen in this case) as opposed to combustion to generate thrust. This would work very well at Titan, with its relatively cold environment. In fact, preheating the air might be a necessity anyway, in order to keep engine components from freezing up. Yes, of course the O2 would be carried, rather than fuel; which is why a combustion jet could be an acceptable method of getting around. I'm pleased that you feel that the density of the air offsets the methane fraction as such. Yet the idea of using the entire volume of inrushing air (and mostly nitrogen at that) using an atomic engine is most desirable, since efficiency is only limited by the craft design rather than by chemistry.

Greetings to all intergalactic civilizations

Welcome! There are a handful of dV charts and such here in the forums (do a search and I'm sure you'll turn up something). I recommend that you obtain and use Kerbal Engineer (and perhaps MechJeb) mods as these can show you your craft mass, dV and TWR by stage; as you are building them. Check out my sig line for an engine chart and my fueled adapters and cones. Apparently, some Windows users are having problems unzipping the file (my brother being one of them), but others don't seem to have a problem. As I use a Mac, I've yet to determine a proper fix. -
You mentioned a "generic atmospheric propellant" and suggest Titan as a possibility for using nuclear jets. However, its lower atmosphere consists of over 95% nitrogen and less than 5% methane. That's a small fuel fraction for a jet to handle. Even our own oxidizer fraction on Earth is nearly 21% oxygen. I'm suggesting that such a "methane" jet would be impractical. Edit: unless you are suggesting that the lower fuel fraction is offset by the low gravity and denser atmosphere. I'm not sure if that's enough to do the trick. However, it would be relatively easy to process rocket fuel from the air and fuel a rocket plane with 100% methane. Oxidizer may be obtained by melting native water ice and splitting it into hydrogen and O2. So an even more potent fuel could be had; hydrogen, or using methane and hydrogen in combination. Too bad the methane percentage isn't higher, as I'm writing a novel in which I'd love to have Titan jets. As for Jupiter jets, that's an intriguing idea. Then there are also the remaining gas giants as well (with much less radiation to deal with also).

Star Villains and Space Heroes - 3rd Person Space Combat!

My iMac is 6 years old but is running Mavericks, so if you've got something more recent than 6 years, it will probably work pretty well for your development and testing purposes. -

Will it be available for the Mac? -
What do you thinks is at the center of our galaxy?

The correct answer is the Lh'owon solar system, of which Lh'owon is the home world of a race known as the S'pht. The population was conquered and enslaved by an alien race known as the Pfhor, in our year 1811 AD. Source: Bungie Software Products Corporation. I'm not seeing your images.

I've an SSTO plane with a single turbojet with 7 air intakes, but it looks decent and does not involve the use of part clipping or stacking; an alternate design has 8 intakes. In reading about SABRE and Skylon, I'm wondering about the engine's curved front to rear design. Is that to conform to the Skylon wing cross section or to take advantage of some shape related engine characteristic?

... and this is the smallest and shortest level in the entire Marathon trilogy. No weapons and nowhere to go. What purpose does it serve? Besides watching the BoBs trying to rescue you (and staying alive), its all about advancing the story. Why sit it out when you can play it for free? http://marathon.sourceforge.net/games/marathon2.php See ya star side!

Heheh! Well, at least I'm hoping that most readers won't laugh themselves onto the floor at something I wrote.

I've been working on an SF novel for quite a while now (research and writing). I'm into hard SF, and am writing the novel I want to read. I had already designed my ships before encountering KSP, and its interesting that playing KSP has given me a "feel" for piloting things which is more insightful and natural than merely watching what a pilot or astronaut does. Its my fond hope that someone reading my work will think that it is realistic and plausible; and at least fun.

Thanks for the heads up. Voted KSP.

DeltaV Without Tears!! NEED TESTERS! NEED Excel 2010

There's also OpenOffice, Spreadsheet. Its cross platform and can open a good variety of formats. Edit: but your file chokes OpenOffice. The file loads about 2/3 of the way and hangs. But that's an O.O. problem, since others can open your file. -
Chances are that if a game is available for co-op play on their preferred platform, its available for yours: http://osxcoopgames.net They (the site maintainers) are expanding their emphasis from Bungie games to include others which will run natively (or at least without Windows) on a Mac. Right now its basic, but should take on a custom look in the future. While I'm not into Minecraft, they are starting with it (as a play through). They expect to get into other games (some Bungie, some not) soon. I for one would like to see them do Portal 2, as an example. Edit: I'm hoping that this list will grow; there are already some very good titles on it: http://osxcoopgames.net/list-games
