I'm Waiting for 0.24 to Download... Now What?
EtherDragon replied to BagelRabbit's topic in KSP1 Discussion
We should change title of this thread to "Anything BUT 0.24" How about this to distract you? Let's Preview Elite: Dangerous! Also, I've been playing a lot of Spore lately. -
I think it's most likely that this is V.1 of random/procedural mission texts. As with many other features introduced earlier, they will be refined as time goes on. They very well may end up being much more meaningful, even if generated randomly. Squad could certainly put in place-holders for "who," "what," "where," "when," "why," and "how." Put in a bunch of sub-templates that fill in the blanks for "who," "what," "where," and "when," but leave the "why" and "how" as complete double-talk. Example Template: ... and then go on to the rest of the summary.
-
Very well said! I tend to agree to the relevant parts, but disagree, where appropriate, to the irrelevant, possibly meaningless, sections in the text. Unless I have missed some apparent meaning, which is not impossible, in which case, I agree.

The Six Words You Never Say at KSC.
EtherDragon replied to Whirligig Girl's topic in KSP1 Discussion
What could possibly go wrong, Jeb? I'm not sure what that does. I know exactly what that does! Don't worry, we've thought of everything! -
"That's a big Twinky."

This video, "First Contract Playthrough" was released by SQUAD on the 11th: was posted in This Official Announcement Thread, by Rowsdower (SQUAD). I think the cat is out of the bag. It's more likely that not a lot of media outlets haven't got their first video ready to go, just yet.

Maybe Tuesday? Who knows, I'm excited too, but you just have to be patient so that Squad can get it all wrapped up nice and stable for us.

Any good explanations of radial burns
EtherDragon replied to davidpsummers's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Mathematically, a perfectly executed Radial Burn causes you apoapsis and periapsis to shift while maintaining the same orbital period. It is particularly useful when you are half-way between the apoapsis and periapsis, and want to adjust them both. An example, as mentioned above, is right after SoI change to a minor body, you will be on a hyperbolic trajectory (escaping after fly-by) - this using a radial burn can move your periapsis closer to the surface with much less Delta-V than a retrograde burn. I use radial burns in every mission where I have my sphere of influence changes - as in from Kerbin to Mun or Minmas, or from the Sun to Duna - each radial burn is done immediately after SoI change for maximum effect. -
You can always tell a new build eminent by:
EtherDragon replied to Ignamious's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Couple of new articles, yesterday - update should be very soon now: PC Gamer: Kerbal Space Program's next update to add contracts, budget and reputation systems and KSP Blog: HarvesteR’s First Contract Update Update #3 -
The most efficient way: First, plan your Minmus departure such that leave Minmus SoI while crossing the orbital plane for your Kerbin space-station. Second, as soon as you leave Minmus SoI make your correction burn to get yourself essentially lined up with the space-station's orbit. Three, normal rendezvous at this point. (Maybe a slight plane change fix after orbital circularization.)

Kerbal space program or prison architect?
EtherDragon replied to kania's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
I have both KSP and Prison Architect and I can say hands down I get more enjoyment out of KSP. Just checked my Steam Stats: KSP = 203 hours played. Prison Archtect = 23 hours played. That help your decision? (P.S. Prison Architect is a lot of fun - but it's more of a distraction, or session game, to me) -
Try this instead: Bring a single high powered engine, and use it to pull out of gravity wells. Your deep space and orbital adjustment maneuvers can all be on the LV-Ns. You'll find you have tons of Delta-V, and still a good TMR. When you are at a point in your mission where you no longer need the big engine - decouple it.
-
DON'T DO IT! It's a trap!!!! If you are using more than TWO LV-N's you are doing it WRONG (in my opinion). The whole point of using an LV-N is it's ridiculous efficiency in a vacuum. But you LOSE all that efficiency by strapping on a bunch of empty mass - which is exactly what a bunch of LV-Ns are. The ONLY time you will use more than 1 LV-N is when you are leaving a deep gravity well. Remember your rocket equation - the more empty mass you bring with you, the less total Delta-V you end up with.

No Science for transmitting?
EtherDragon replied to Leviathan9821's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Which experiment exactly is reporting this? Some experiments give very little (if none) science for transmission. -
To avoid going pointy clicky crazy, group your experiments into Action Groups in the VAB. Then at the press of the "5" key (for example) you do a battery of experiments for a single biome. The next on "6" and again on "7" etc... that is if you have several experiments that can't be repeated - like 8 goo canisters or something.

Episode 4 - Touring New Systems!
-
So, I have a whole separate channel dedicated to Kerbal Space Program stuff - that I haven't touched in months for two reasons: 1. I'm waiting for the next update to Career Mode to really kick off a new series. 2. Elite Dangerous has eaten my spare time. Frontier Developments is literally modelling the entire Milky Way Galaxy in this game. Singe, Binary, and Trinary star systems with Planets, Moons, Asteroid belts, different kinds of space stations, some 40+ different ships to fly (as of now, there are only three - soon four). Elite Dangerous is fully+ funded at about 2-million pounds sterling, and is under full development. Yes, you can fly to and explore all of these locations up close - as you approach a planetary belt, at first you see just the haze, then you start making out individual dots - eventually it starts looking like gravel, but you are still a long way off. As you get closer you finally realize just how massive each of the asteroids really are - and there are billions of them, just around this one planet. Here are a couple more Science! videos worth mentioning. Here I talk about how Elite: Dangerous is going to model some 400-Billion stars: In this one I talk about Artificial Gravity:

How to turn this into an orbit?
EtherDragon replied to Qwotty's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
It may not be enough to burn only at periapsis, if you have low thrust. You may need to start thrusting now, and just leave the engines on for a long time to slow down sufficiently. Another option is to use lateral thrust to change your angle of approach, but that will also take some time and you should start "now". -
Hey, everyone. I have posted my first Premium Beta preview of Elite Dangerous over on Sim Gamer TV. Whether or not you know about Elite Dangerous, please check it out! P.S. Feel free to comment on my video!

Hey! I've ben taking a break from KSP videos until 0.24 comes out. But I'm still making other videos on my channel Sim Gamer TV. Watch and laugh along with me as I try to drive a truck in Europe while drunk, in Euro Truck Simulator 2. Please, share this video, join the conversation, do something.
-
To OP: Get the game now. Yes 0.24 might add contracts, but as the game is right now, it has a very playable game cycle in the current iteration of career mode. One cool thing, in this sandbox game, the "end-game" for career mode isn't a final boss or mission, but the ability to use all the parts that exist and explore the entire Kerbol Solar System.

Using a series of small burns.
EtherDragon replied to liquidis54's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
The only part of any mission that may require you to split your burn is the Ejection Burn from a planetary SOI. The reason is because the burn is prohibitively long, otherwise. So, as others suggested, for instance when leaving Kerbin for interplanetary space, do three burns at your burn point - once for each fly by at 10 minutes. Once you are out of Kerbin's SOI - 30 minute burns are no biggy at all because of the extreme time-frame you are now working with. -
Kerbin got hit with an asteroid.
