  1. Excellent work there.. I really like the design of your original station, particularly that trick with the RCS tanks. It looks very neat, I might have to try it!
  2. I have a Gerlie Kerman who I'm saving for a special mission. I figure that name needs to get into Kerbal history somehow. Also, Billy-Bobfred Kerman, the Kerbal with extremely indecisive parents.
  3. As others have already mentioned, in real life one-way missions are a very real possibility. Honestly, if you're someone who wants to live a full and long life going outside of Earth's magnetic field for the however many years a manned mission to another planet would take is highly inadvisable anyway. There are almost certainly people who can cope with that. I can't say I'm one of them, but I'm sure they exist. But yeah.. I refuse to send one-way missions (although accidents happen) and honestly, given the degree to which you have to set your own goals at the moment I'd say this is actually the mark of a good player.
  4. Given the number of biomes on Kerbin, I find it's not too difficult to get enough science for electricity without having to leave low Kerbin orbit. Sending tiny manned capsules to places like the desert and the polar ice caps can get you a lot of science, as can landing in the sea. Even the launchpad counts as a separate biome! Granted, it may mean sacrificing other things which may be useful, like decent engines, but it will allow you to get to Munar orbit which will give you your next big chunk of science to upgrade further.
  5. I've not made it to Jool yet so take this as an uneducated guess, but I'm sure you could.. I'm just not sure you'd necessarily save any delta v by doing it. As far as I can see, most of the delta-v cost of reaching Tylo is actually going to be due to slowing down enough to avoid being flung out of its sphere of influence. By passing close over Jool, you can exploit the Oberth effect to lower that speed faster so you only leave Jool with enough energy to get to Tylo and not to fly out of Jool's sphere of influence altogether (this came up in the previous video). You could, as I understand it from other mission reports, also theoretically save delta-v altogether by performing an aerocapture in Jool's atmosphere, although that's a bit less predictable.
  6. Lots of useful information here. I think (as usual) I've built my Duna ships too big, but I suppose that's part of the learning curve too. Will be trying some of these hints out once the flight window opens.
  7. This is an amazing project. You've inspired me to try my own multi-ship mission to Duna. Minor point, but I like how you put heat-shields on your ships, as well. I know it's not necessary yet, but it looks realistic.
  8. I finally got to Minimus a few days ago. It was only my second successful landing (after the Mun) This is the embarrassingly over-sized lander/rocket. It was my first time using the LV-N engines and I didn't quite grasp how little fuel they need. On arrival, Jeb and Bill got a nice view of Kerbin and the Mun. Because there was so much spare fuel, I managed to come back on a polar orbit and dropped Bill and Jeb onto the Northern ice cap, which I hadn't visited yet. I'd like to try and land on one of the high plateaus next time.
