I got tired of changing joystick settings, and workarounds for getting a joystick to work, and just modified my own to work with KSP. Now with the flip of a switch it becomes a Kerbal controller and when switched back returns to the default. When the switch is flipped to Kerbal control, another switch on the controller(top right of photo) is enabled to switch between vertical and horizontal flight, (aka: from landers, helis and vtol's to aircraft control) otherwise you would have to modify the settings whenever you switched from aircraft to rockets/etc. Here's a pic of the modded electronics. It's a "bodge job" but I didn't want to make a pcb. Kerbal Controller by Blind Compass, on Flickr Here's my latest youtube video showing how well you can control a lander.
