And with that, I unlocked "large probes" as though that one probe is more useful somehow than the smaller ones.

HOW TO SUCK AT THIS GAME@!!@ Where is my decoupler? Oh that's right, I didn't pack one. There are no heat shields on this either. DRE difficulty is overrated (Until you try landing on Eve!). With a combination of a low circular orbit, a shallow ascent, and 30pts of liquidfuel to burn off some speed, there wasn't even any red atmospheric effects to see. FERRAM! Stop turning me! Yep, the chutes broke off all the weight and the command module sailed down easily. Science!
-
A 45km approach. Any closer.. DRE starts to explode things. Fortunately, somehow, this rocket still had the roughly 900ms dv it had to burn off. This continued for a while, with about five laps being done to slowly aerobrake the AP down without having to burn.
-
This is where the weight associated with TAC really comes into play. This rocket would be dead light if not for a few tonne of food, water, oxygen, purifiers and filters. I was very nervous about this.

For some reason I never got the obligatory EVA photo, but I did walk around and gather science from the equipment, before decoupling the science parts and taking off. The lander had an asparagus stage so I could lose a majority of the weight and assist with docking, only it turned out I couldn't actually use that until right near the mothership. See the problem? RTGs on the outside stage. I tried to stage this thing and do a lap looking for a good intercept, and ended up with dead kerbals and a quickload. Once again, Precisenode gives a perfect demonstration of what Alexmoon claims.
-
Alexmoon gave us a good plan. Using Precisenode to execute it. Burning away. Large tank dropped. We manually transferred fuel around to ensure we could do this ASAP. That's still one huge insertion burn. I'll admit by the end of it I was doubting the ability to return. EVA to the lander. Coming in for landing. There's a huge TWR on this baby despite a using small engines. I like it that way - makes for an interesting suicide burn. Down.

Hey guys, After completing all my existing goals in a mostly vanilla setting, I set out to play with some mods. No, not a bunch of overpowered rockets, but: Deadly re-entry TAC Life support FAR Restarting career mode with these made for a very interesting playthrough. TAC in particular has an element of limiting the ridiculous early tier constructions. In this mission, we carried a full science kit. Having only been to Moho once before, I wanted to hit this up. So far in this career, I've cleared Ike and Gilly, then Eeloo, and now it's Moho. Moho in particular you would be aware is a huge pain as far as dv requirements go, so this is my first play through with Precisenode and Kerbal alarm clock to really get those transfers down pat. When I went to Moho before, I did three docks in orbit to put together something large enough. Here we can see a "single launch" version. Take off with FAR is very interesting. It also meant I lugged nosecones the whole way to Moho. Launch continued. Expanding solar panels as soon as I can. If this thing runs out of power - TAC kills everyone on board. The first "in orbit" shot, with all TAC and KER components.
-
How much have you unlocked and how far along are you? Have you managed to get into orbit yet?
-
That's one of the best pictures I've seen on this forum. It's odd that Navyfish got it fixed - it implies they didn't just reuse any of the code that the original nav ball uses.
-
I'm literally touching the thing it thinks my target is. If I turn and point towards the actual docking port from here, the target pointer is ~45 degrees away from where I'm pointing.

I think kasua is the only one with the right idea here.

Tylo landing And accent Deltav? And TWR
technion replied to Dooz's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Tylo is one of those places where it really is very difficult to land stock. Planning a suicide burn when you have no idea where "5000m altitude" means "5000m above surface" or "you're about to hit the surface" is extremely luck based. -
Tylo landing And accent Deltav? And TWR
technion replied to Dooz's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
The perfect descent involves an absolutely perfect suicide burn - which is incredibly unlikely. More likely, you'll slow right down a few hundred meters up, and burn stacks of fuel trying to land softly. I've built a variety of different Tylo models and it always takes a lot to land, with a fairly small amount of power to ascent. -
There's none. But meh... I didn't have a problem with manouevering to dock.
-
The RCS thrusts are in the VAB where they have been sitting ever since I forgot them. That said, this isn't a "I don't know how to dock" thread. You can see from the screenshot I had no problems coming in at 0.1m/s with the prograde perfectly on the pink marker, with speed hitting 0 with that pink marker right in front of me when I connected with the engine. So unless more RCS actually changes where that stupid pink target marker sits it's not going to help me. Yes, I've done the "control from here" and for any mod that's going to help me dock with a 47-8S... well it isn't going to help a lot.

I've got no idea what was censored in my original post.. it was meant to say "targeting".
-
I literally only just built it. The root part, is actually on another part of the ship ie "the mothership". The idea here has been to build a "moon transfer ship" that's a separate nuclear component to the "mothership" and try to make a minimal Joolean tour.
-
Hey guys, After repeated attempts, I've come to the conclusion that docking these two vessels is difficult because the target from one never points at the docking port on the other. I'm aware of a bug where it keep ****ting the COM, but it's not doing that. It seems to be focusing on one side engine. I've tried repeatedly "unset target", followed by definitely "set target".

Just to be clear, are you intending on just landing on Eve, or performing a return trip from Eve? It's a big difference. Anything that can land on the Mun can land on Eve - just put a parachute or two on it. Getting there isn't much more difficult than getting to Duna. Anything designed to return from the surface however is going to be a big deal.
-
If the char is too far away for bsalis' advice to work - the thing you need to do is turn the ladder 45 degrees by holding the shift key and turning it. Then clip half of it through the surface so it basically allows the kerbal to walk off the existing ladder onto this one. Honestly I wish they'd call it a bug and fix it.

Explain Science Like I am 5 Please.
technion replied to engraverwilliam's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
People offer advice for cleaning out biomes on the Mun and Minmus but that's only one way to play. Once you can manage those two, a slightly bigger rocket will probably manage a Duna flyby. And the science from there will get you a Duna landing. And a Duna landing will unlock a large portion of the tree.
