[UNOFFICIAL/FANMADE] 0.17 Discussion Thread 2

Considering that I use the nav-ball at all times, I think it's going to be easy but more rewarding and realistic:) -
Every time I enter kerbalspaceprogram.com into my address bar I get really scared that I'll see 0.17 is released. I guess I feel the anxiety as well:) Just like when I do ladder games in StarCraft 2.
-
I really like how doing interplanetary missions is hard but once you do it, it becomes kind of automatic. You know exactly how and what to do:)
-
My simulation of an interplanetary mission(done yesterday): http://kerbalspaceprogram.com/forum/showthread.php/19911-Mission-report-interplanetary-travel-to-Kerbin-2 It was the hardest thing I've ever done so far in KSP and there was even a "crap! no! no! no!" moment.

This part I don't like. I hoped it'd force us to design vehicles capable of landing on water:( -

Does Laythe have atmosphere? I think so, but I'm not entirely sure. Water is in liquid state there, right? -
Mission report: interplanetary travel to Kerbin 2
ForumHelper replied to ForumHelper's topic in KSP1 Discussion
These are empty fuselages indeed. This was something I made after I've learned that Jool's going to have an ocean moon. I already had a 170 tons rocket(check my signature) but it couldn't land everywhere. This one can but because it's heavy it doesn't have a lot of extra delta-V. Kerbin 2 was only recently discovered. It is more than certain that not every map is up to date:) -
Below you'll find a complete mission report of the first interplanetary mission ever done by(my) Kerbals. Meet the crew & the objective: The objective was to travel into interplanetary space and from there enter a new planet's SOI that's been discovered just two days ago. These three brave kerbals were chosen(against their will) to do science(mostly swim in the ocean) on "Kerbin 2" - a planet so simillar to Kerbin that -in fact - it could've been Kerbin itself. Captain Camton in charge was a well-trained kerbonaut who had successfuly crashed many rockets. Therefore the mission was considered a success even before it started. At worst every kerbal in the 1000km radius would admire beautiful fireworks. Meet the ship: Ship name: DST 3(Deep space traveller, 3 marking the vessel type - capable of landing on water) The ship used was an experimental design found by one of the KSC members on the road on his way to the launchpad. It seemed to be kerbal enough, so engineers decided to build it at once. DST 3 - for this particular mission some of the engines were left out. Early tests showed no potential at all - instead the rocket would explode and it's onboard CPU(i5 2430m 2.4 GHz) would die almost instantly. It was, however, kerbal enough so the tests continued. The Mission: Below you can find a bunch of images sent back by Camton during his mission lasting 460+ days. Onboard computer crashed moments after. It is now known this photo has been edited. The captain did not begin the landing burn, that was supposed to reduce the vessel's speed to ~3m/s, in time. All five lower engines were torn off during what looked like a crash landing. Camton was so ashamed of himself that he decided to edit the picture. However, KSC was able to provide a photo from a simillar lander test(which happened a day earlier): It wasn't clear if the vessel would lift again nor was it known if - in case it did lift - there was enough power and delta-V to achieve orbit... There are no other ships. For all we know it's just an error in the ship's software. This the KSC could not identify. The photo was made by a satelite around Kerbin. It was categorized as UFO. It is not clear how Camton and his crew managed to return to Kerbin - one day they simply landed in the sea next to KSC. Some believe they never left Kerbin. Official story is as follows: Edan and Wilsel pushed the capsule all the way back using their space suits as their vessel was not meant to return. Instead a rescue mission would've been launched later on. Official mission status: Success! Direct link to craft file(Lander only, this model contains enginees that allow the vessel to travel while landed in water): http://kerbalspaceprogram.com/forum/showthread.php/19888-0-16-MechJeb-Lander-capable-of-swimming-and-achieving-orbit More pictures in the link above! Hope you enjoyed my little story:)

Since I've shared this vehicle in the 0.17 discussion thread, I might as well post it here. Full story behind the design: http://kerbalspaceprogram.com/forum/showthread.php/19911-Post-mission-report-interplanetary-travel-to-Kerbin-2 Pictures here: http://imgur.com/a/nYOrF#0 (Older version of this lander, still landing/launching is exactly the same) http://imgur.com/a/XqrU5#0 It's a vessel that I made for one of Jool's moons which is 100% water. Therefore it had to achieve certain goals: -Land on water -Float and be capable of moving -Be capable of launching again and achieving orbit -Have enough fuel to do a space meeting for crew extraction. Not only can this lander land(thank you captain obvious:P) on water but it is also capable of moving around and launching(again) into orbit(in Kerbin's case it's 75km circular orbit). Landing should proceed as follows: -Enter atmosphere and slow down to ~100m/s -Open parachutes and wait until ~30m above surface -Do a short burn in order to slow down to ~3m/s and land -Disable all liquid fuel tanks' fuel flow -Enable engines of choice to move around in water Launching: -Disable atmospheric engines -Enable liquid fuel tanks' fuel flow -Detach parachutes -Start the burn and detach the platform -Fly, detaching used parts as you go No launcher attached - experiment on your own:) And yes - it is possible to get it into orbit, though it is really CPU-heavy(just like my other 170t vessel).

Sure. Keep in mind that launching it into space is going to be really CPU-heavy. This craft requires MechJeb only. Other than that, it is stock. -

Here you go;) http://imgur.com/a/XqrU5#0 It achieves 2.3m/s and is stable. To control it you enable engines that point in the direction you chose to go to. Vessel mass is ~80 tons(MechJeb stats) so it's not that heavy considering it can get into a circular 75km orbit around Kerbin. -

I think we'll need to design a vessel capable of landing on water and then achieving orbit - One of Jool's moons is full of water. I'm working on one as I write this: http://imgur.com/a/nYOrF#0 So far so good, now it's time to build a stage capable of doing a hohman's transfer and a launcher stage(which is no doubt going to be huge). Special thanks to szyzyg(also known as Scott Manley) for his awesome idea(two aerospike engines and detachable fuel tanks)! -

I use one set(4) of boosters at the very beginning + all my liquid fuel engines on the laucher stage, then liquid fuel engines carry it into an orbit. I use fuel lines and a lot of struts. -
I had simillar issues with my rockets. Replace your radial decouplers with the other ones and add struts(a lot of them). This usually allows you to drop used parts without blowing your rocket up. This particular radial decoupler works for boosters but is really bad when you use it to detach huge used stages. If you have enough dV in this stage you can go full kerbal and add 2 boosters that'd be perpendicular to your rocket part(s) which you want to drop in such a way that the smoke goes inside your ship and fire them seconds before detaching;) Works pretty well but creates a LOT of smoke.
-
They are randomly generated from a list of name parts. The only two kerbals to be named after someone are Wernher von Kerman and Gene Kerman. "Gene is based upon Gene Kranz, former NASA director and manager." and Wernher is based on Wernher von Braun, "Wernher Magnus Maximilian, Freiherr von Braun (March 23, 1912 – June 16, 1977) was a German-American rocket scientist, aerospace engineer, space architect, and one of the leading figures in the development of rocket technology in Nazi Germany during World War II and, subsequently, the United States."

Change your password to something simple for a moment and try then. Something like "Ilikeanimals". Without any special characters. Also, in order to use the patcher(old one, with stars and black background) you must have 0.15 version.
-
Well.. that's something new You can use websites like http://virustotal.com or http://virusscan.jotti.org/ to check the file and compare different AVs' results.
-
Are you by any chance using Norton? It's been causing simillar issues in the past.
-
You probably have no patcher in your KSP folder. If that's the case, you won't be able to get the updated one(as far as I know) and we'll probably have to download a full zip archive once 0.17 is released.

That's really cool! I've always wondered why there were not many BSG games. I'll certainly check it out. -

I can't find the patcher in my KSP folder neither in the archive I've downloaded from KSP store. What's up with that? -
I don't even have the patcher in my KSP folder:O It's a fresh installation, what's going on?
-
Nothing here as well.
-
Well done! This is probably the hardest thing to do without MechJeb(and kind of hard with MechJeb)
