stoned puppy

Sorry if this is a stupid question but how do I connect to a server. I've put the KMP folder in GameData, put the KMP Save folder in the save folder yet when I tried and load the save it simply tells me that I need to update the save needs to be upgraded then it just freezes. I am using the steam version of ksp if that might make any difference. Some help would be appreciated.
