Community here is better than average. You rarely come across what I refer to as "technical arrogance". Knowledge is power, or something like that and in the field, many folks feel that surrendering knowledge is the same as surrendering power; Those with only a little knowledge are prone to be stingy with it. The patience and generosity exhibited in this forum truly demonstrates the abundance of knowledge it harbors.

A couple years ago I spent a couple hours trying to jettison a couple engines using that button. I thought my download was borked and downloaded it fresh. Nope... I gave up. A couple days later I had a couple new ideas to try to decouple those engines. Again, No dice. I almost quit playing KSP over that... I felt both cheated and stupid. Ignorance coupled with pride is an impossible burden. Good thing I came to this forum and lightened my burden! When I was fourteen, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have him around. When I got to be twenty-one, I was astonished at how much he had learned in seven years. ~Twain

I'd like to see the science experiments pay off more than points to increase the selection of stuff to use. (An abstraction, at best.) Something along the lines of thermometer + barometer (at low altitude) = ?? i dunno, greater understanding of sound barrier? Aerodynamic parts now 10% cheaper to build? Sounds a bit cheesy and reeks of crafting like some MMO... but I don't get a huge sense of accomplishment from simply achieving points.

Looking at my school clubs for next year and found this
match replied to KrizzGaming's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Rocks? We used little brothers... and sisters too til mom put an end to that. Still, I wonder where Robby is now? I wish I could retire now and start a club like that, it actually sounds like fun. -
Haven't tried using it during design , but F12 enables an aerodynamic overlay during flight which may be helpful (and has increased my Steam screenshots tenfold!)

You also can adjust the thrust on your engine to give you greater control. Right click the engine to adjust your max thrust to a more suitable range (multiple engines should be set to same level to avoid asymmetrical thrust). You can use this to fine tune orbits as well. -Just remember to set them back up before you want to leave! -oh, and learn to trust the nav ball... I also will use shadow to gauge altitude, but when trying to use outside references to make adjustments, it never ends well!

Transonic region a problem.
match replied to Screeno's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
I've been messing around with ssto lately and using the F12 debug for aerodynamics. It seems to me that having too little lift has quite an impact, especially in the transonic region. As the AoA grows, those drag markers get really big (I am assuming that is bad). I've been erring toward more lift rather than just enough with better success in the transition. -
You Will Not Go To Space Today - Post your fails here!

Oh you evil developers! Can't quite reach the materials bay from outside the service bay. Well, looks like a lot of room in there. Maybe Kerberry could slip inside real quick and grab the science!... uh oh... oh dear, you certainly made a mess of things, Kerberry. -
I always feel that when I need to drop the thrust on the SRBs that I did not engineer something correctly. I want them to burn as fast and strong as they are designed to be... and then stage them off. -With Sepratrons deeper in the tech tree, I found that I need to be a bit more careful staging. Need to be out of a transition and as close to center of prograde ring to avoid mishaps. I use the extended radial decoupler far more than I used to, especially with the SRBs.

I almost had a riot on Mun when I told the tourists they couldn't go for a walk when we got there. Had to ventilate their can a bit to let them cool off. Almost left them there... Want to take a walk? How about a walk back to Kerbal!

A Duck! Seriously, it has to be a LAUNCH button. First time I played I stared at the screen in confusion until I facerolled the keyboard... which worked! (Nose must have caught the space-bar.)

I like the Armstrong location for ease of use. I also like the canyon that stretches east from one of the farside craters. There is a grouping of biomes close by, although I really haven't had the need to gather science lately. I like the approach, trying to hold off on firing retrograde until I am inside the canyon walls. There really isn't too much level ground there, however. I like to think of it as my secret Mun base... only I guess it's not too secret anymore :/

Ok, so maaaaaybe I might be working on something again.

Rest well and dream of large... boosters. Welcome back Whackjob. -
How about Voltron... cars, not cats. Fifteen separate launches with orbital assembly... hrmm sounds like a lotta work... maybe cats

About Outpost Contracts

I don't think KAS pipes work, or at least for the last connection. It may have been the way I had mine set up, though. I didn't test it thoroughly, but I think if pipes are used for the last connection, it doesn't validate the criteria properly. I had winches available and that did work when used with the dock function when connecting. -

Calculating Satellite Altitude for RemoteTech
match replied to rogerwilco's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
I think you will find that while the solution of 600 km solves the equation, it does not fully resolve the issue. At 600 km, the line between satellites tangents the planet. LOS will be obstructed. While it is good to brush off those trig skills, do take a moment to consider the issue from a min max view. You have found the minimum altitude capable of a three satellite deployment (>600 km). The next step is to rework it from the other end... What is the maximum altitude that three satellites could operate? (Using Communitron 16s, like the first example.) From there you will find that the difference needed in dv is minor, so the final choice of altitude may be based on personal choice. I use a 90 minute orbital period ~775 km, iirc. I normally launch all three at once to a 125 km orbit and insert on successive orbits (30 miutes apart). I only put omnidirectionals on these and they serve as the inner relay, but you can easily add dishes for LD comms if desired. -
Amazing new theory to explain the Kerbol system!

Jebediah is my great, great, great, great, great.... umm, he's this old uncle of mine. But his grandparents got in a pickle when they were younger and he went back in time to straighten them out. Then he and his buddies went gallivanting across time in search of snacks. Incessant disregard for the laws of relativity eventually ejected them from the eighth dimension which in turn caused an inverse improbability wave to spew forth from the closest stellar body. Our solar system was swapped with an identical system on the opposite side of the galaxy. They were the exactly the same except the residents of the other system eat their corn on the cob up and down instead of sideways... and talk backwards. Yes, I am from the future. And no, it's not pretty... why do you think we all came here? But we did bring wine... and snacks, lots of snacks. true storyâ„¢ -

I am a better person because of his presence on this world. I thought I could summarize his body of work tidily and assign it some meaning. But I cannot. I thought I could impart some wisdom by equating his simple talent of communicating effectively as a complex inspirational beacon. But I cannot. I thought to express how a dispassionate character from so long ago could instill passion into the methodical discipline of science for so many for so long. I thought to impress that his greatest gift was softening the line between science and fiction. Others can say the stars are a bit dimmer with his passing. But I cannot.

A better way of actually finding the locations for surveys?
match replied to PTNLemay's topic in KSP1 Discussion
You can also drop a flag or two in the general area to use for orienting yourself when EVA. Before I was able to build a rover, I would land in the general area, drop a flag and then land closer to the sites. Worked fairly well for getting your bearings, especially in rugged areas... Then I downloaded Waypoint Manager. Now everything is easier. My acne has cleared up. My car no longer dies at stoplights. My dog cleans up after himself! Thank you Waypoint Manager!! editor's note: match appears to have experienced a schism with reality. He does not even own a dog. -
Help with undocking my first lander
match replied to cindersash's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Another possibility I can think of is if one of the docking ports is inverted, or if the two ports are not connected to each other (like if you attached one port to a Cubic octagonal strut, but connected it to the inside node of the strut, leaving the outside node of the strut available for the next part, or port, in this case) edit:Your design is ok (fairly certain you could grab some groceries from Moho on the way back from Minmus ), but do avoid things like this: [spoiler=] -
...When you deploy your chutes at launch and never really notice.

125 km standard parking orbit for me. Used it for initial orbit while inserting satellite relays with Remote Tech (3 birds @ 776 km) and found it useful as a rallying point for most other operations.
