  1. I once landed on one of the moons and returned using only solids (I forget which one). I'll see if I can dig up pictures or do it again. Landing is the hardest part lots of spinning to stop over burns.
  2. I think K3achas question is the same as mine. If I lift the stage to the Launch pad un fueled but then instead of hacking the fuel in we lift fuel tanks to it and then transfure the fuel accross using docking ports. Dose this count as medium or hard mode? I think this should be medium but it dose feel more legit then hacking the fuel in. If this does count as hard mode I've going to make use of it. Also my construction vehicle has 2 parts. A base with wheels and a VTOL part. I spawn the Rocket part on the runway drive up to it. Undock VTOL and fly and dock to the top of the rocket part. then lift the rocket part to the base and drive over to the launch pad on wheels before undocking from the base and lifting the part on to the pad. I hope that this can count as one construction vehicle.
  3. He meens a space plane where you stage at take off so the wheels dont leave the ground(I think).
  4. 1 engine ideas Airship: A LV-T30 with lift 5 FL-T400 Fuel Tank and a Mk1 lander can has a TWR of 1:1 at eve sea level. With that you can see up a small aspague stage ship that will get you at most 15k from sea level. But lunch that from high up where the air is thin then it should have no problem reaching orbit so stick some airship parts and you do fine with just one engine. I have not used the airship mod but I guess that it will help the the landing. (not that landing anything that small on eve it a problem. The thick air helps when landing.) RocketPlane: I'm not use good with aircraft but I think you could take of with one with a TWR of 1:3 so that meens 5 x FL-T800 for the plane stages and 5 x FL-T400 for the rocket stages. 2 engine ideas: Stock rocket. 5 FL-T400 Fuel Tank aspague stage ship works for the upperstages. The lower stages you use the you use a main sail with 7 core aspague stage ship. I think you can use the 9 ton tanks which should give you TWR of 1:1 but maybe you have to swap out 2 of the tanks for the 4.5 ton ones. Also you could try using more then 5 FL-T400 on the upperstage yes you would have a TWR<1 but you would of just go a kick from the mainsail so while you would be slowing down for a short time it should not be a problem. No idea if this will work but I cant think of anyway to get more delta-v with 2 engines on eve. I have not had time test much yet. But thats my thinking so far. might try some ideas tonight.
  5. Wings are out but airship mods are fine? Thats a shame I can unterstand not wanting to use an infiniglide glitch and it not as if we can use jets on eve (no oxygen) shame we cant use wings to take out with a low TWR. oh well I guess I'll leave this challenge to others.
  6. Mmmm intressing maybe some kind of winged craft using a single LV-T30 with TWR<1 then ditching the wings and some emty tanks when you get some hieght. Any one know how I can hack kerbins stats to that it like eve so I can do some tests?
  7. 8 parts, one over heat staging to skip a decoupler. part list in order: rockomax x200-16 Fuel Tank TR-18A Stack Decoupler (upside down) Mark 1 Lander Can FL-T400 Atomic Rocket Motor Jumbo-64 Jumbo-64 Mainsail BTW this is my second ever Tylo landing. Heres my first one, I used 689 parts: http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/57197-The-ultimate-Jool-5-challenge-land-Kerbals-on-all-moons-and-return-in-one-big-misson?p=789853&viewfull=1#post789853
  8. Nicely done. I liked the Laythe jet and getting all the pods back as well is a nice touch. I had lots of parachute on my kerbin lander but in the end if I used more then one at the start it would rip apart my lander as they fully opened. so I had to split them up into there own stages like you did and trigger 1 till below 500m to the ground. It looks like you had to do the same.
  9. looking at this docking and undocking looks doable (but hard) but I dont think you can transfure fuel to the lander which is limiting.
  10. Question: did you go into orbit around Eeloo, Dres, Ike, or just landed with the help of the Space Tug and catched up with the Mothership? Yes I took my mother ship to all those places and got into a high orbit and used the tug to get to a low orbit. Would of been better to do a fly by with the mother ship but didn't think of it. I didn't get into orbit with Ike but did with duna. well done on doing it too. A larger lander would of made it a lot harder for you. So congratulations.
  11. Would of liked it better if we could pick which moon but thats just me. I'm happy to aim for Mun. Will give this a go tonight. (my last craft was over 2500 tons I'll try and make this one a little lighter. http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/57197-THE-ULTIMATE-JOOL-5-CHALLENGE-land-Kerbals-on-all-moons-and-return-in-one-big-misson?p=789853&viewfull=1#post789853)
  12. This is my challange attemped. Single Launch. No need to send out any fuel trucks from kerbin. Ribbons for this mission: If I where to do this again the things I would change are: Use the Mk1 Lander Can instead of the Mk1 command pod so that I can use the normal size docking ported every instead of the small ones to cut down on wobble. Ditch the RCS I no longer need it for docking. Jeb is already planing his next trip. Might need 14 Kerbals next time.
  13. I did the same thing, 7 red tanks, but I added radial decouplers. Added 6 part count so I could ditch a 2 ton empty tanks seemed like a good trade to me. I finished this challange will post pics this lunch time (GMT).
  14. I would of posted my solution to this challange today but I had a bit of a problem on my way back to Kerbin. The problem being after spotting how much spare fuel we have Jeb is claiming that eeloo and dres and ike are also moons of Jool and we should stop at them. Will post soon. (note: I had it easy on this as, unlike people like Ziv, I'm not carrying a load of science stuff around which makes it easyer for me.) P.S. my 'moon shuttle' or 'large space tug' as I called it was also my unplan star of this mission.
  15. FYI retrograde is always based on your obital speeds. but you can do: r(180,0,0)+velocity:surface. here is the start of a powered lander scripted I'm working on. print "start landing". set mythrust to 0. lock throttle to mythrust. until (alt:radar < 5) { lock steering to r(180,0,0)+velocity:surface. set speedlimit to alt:radar/10. set test to velocity:surface:mag. set test to test - 5. set test to test/speedlimit. if (test>1) { set test to 1. } if (test<0) { set test to 0. } set mythrust to test. print mythrust. }. print "done". set mythrust to 0. wait 1. unlock throttle. unlock steering.
  16. I'm new to KOS and have a few questions. When I get retrograde is that surface or orbit? and can I switch? Also so is there a way to convert a vector into a rotation and back. (I know I'll lose roll information.) I want to work out how to thust 50% between my surface retrograde and the horizon to kill my sidways movment. So I can time a Suicide burn. Thanks.
  17. Answers) A) Me, poor Jeb Me, but I pulled the landing off anyway. Dam those command pods are almost a tough as Jebs skull. c) I have not been playing KSP much. D) Lies.
  18. Mcirish3 thats a nice fuel tank booster. Is that lifting 10 full tanks? Mine can just about do that but I normly just do 7. Your craft looks wider then mine I can only build my craft 5 large tanks across before I cann't get camera angles to place stuff so I have to build tall. how did you build that? My craft in orbit is 384 tons and I use 18 nukes to move it to jool with that I had an 18 min burn time which is a bit longer then I liked but did it in 2 orbits. First burn was 4 mins (2 mins before and after the node) second was started 2 mins before the node and put me on an escape path before my 4 mins limit was up so I keep burning. I would love to know the staging setup of your launch vehicles. Mine is: lower stage: 18 Mainsails each feed with 2 red tanks. (+ 12 solids but they dont do much) mid stage: 18 Mainsails each with 1 red tank cross feed and drop in groups of 6. Upper stage: single nuke with a small tank used to make finle orbit after the last 6 mainsails are drop just before orbit to stop debry. it has a remote guidance unit so it can deorbit it's self. I'm surpizzed you rocket can hold it self up on the pad. I found if you add Rockomax Brand Decoupler to your mainsails you can attach a Launch Stability Enhancer to the bottom. So you can support your inner cores.
  19. I think so. But thats not the point of the lhallenge. At level 3 (which I'm doing) the challenge is one kerbal per moon. I'm not doing this for the sciance I'm doing it for the flags. normly I take jeb alone in a small command pod. This challange makes it more intressing. (I'm playing in sandbox mode)
  20. I tweeked my craft. Mostly change the size of some of the docking ports. To make most of them use the tiny size so they all fit together and give me some more options once I get to Jool. Added more space take so the weeker ports hold together during take off and added remote guidance to all of the landers. I only had time to do Laythe so far but I'm happy with it. The mission is going well.
  21. I like this Challenge idea. I've done a few large missions before and have got feed up with boosting up and docking the large red tanks (and also I think having a lot of docking ports hurts my frame rate). So I build a Launch Vehicle that can easily boost 7 red tanks into orbit with no space derby and an in orbit part count as low as 14 (7 full red tanks, 6 radial decuples, 1 docking port) but normally I add a few more docking ports, SAS, solar panels and sometimes remote guidance and engines. So I took this Launch added some 18 nuke engines to the side of the red tanks and set the red tanks set it up with asparagus staging (something I offend do). I also added: A Hitchhiker storage container & mk2-1 command pod as a habit for the 5 Kerbals on the trip as well as return them safely back to the kerbal surface. 2 disposable Landers, one customised for Laythe and the other for Tylo. 1 reusable Lander for Vall, Pol and Bop A small space tug. And I've kept the last stage of the launcher that normally undocks and de-orbits itself. As I feel it can be useful maybe as a return stage or a large space tug. With all this added mass it went from a very easy launch to a very hard one and I even had to use some of the upper stage fuel to make orbit. but it didn’t use too much and I don’t see the need to send up a refuelling ship and I think I have more than fuel then I need for this mission anyway. Next stop Jool.
