[0.16.0] Challenge: Build an SSTO Craft in .16!
Apotheosist replied to RayneCloud's topic in KSP1 The Spacecraft Exchange
Just so everyone knows, there is a bug in this version that would make SSTO easy http://kerbalspaceprogram.com/forum/index.php?topic=17006.0;topicseen -
[Stock 0.16] Smallest Mun lander possible?
Apotheosist replied to Apotheosist's topic in KSP1 The Spacecraft Exchange
It\'s a bug people http://kerbalspaceprogram.com/forum/index.php?topic=17006.0;topicseen Someone managed to land on the Mun and come back on a single half tank. I just managed to get into orbit with the same configuration, with half a half tank left, but didn\'t want to go to the Mun as it would take too long. The secret lies in the low throttle setting. The lower the setting, the higher the efficiency. -
I think 'Muncastles' should be called 'regolith castles' for the same reason sandcastles aren\'t called 'beachcastles'

[Stock 0.16] Smallest Mun lander possible?
Apotheosist replied to Apotheosist's topic in KSP1 The Spacecraft Exchange
@karlous10, when I first saw your design with the jet engine, I thought 'Wow, that\'s AMAZING! Some really elegant design there. The bar has been raised considerably.' I tried it out, but I\'m not familiar with jet engines so I didn\'t get very far at all. I came back here to see you had posted pictures of an alternative design using an aerospike engine. I was very skeptical about it though. So I did some calculations. The results were: I calculated the first stage of your rocket to have 1374.9 m/s of delta-v, and the second stage to have 1298.5 m/s of delta-v. In total, this makes 2673.4 m/s of delta-v. Now, from my experience that isn\'t even enough to make orbit, with familiar numbers for low orbit to me being at least 4,000 m/s. I wanted some practical evidence though, so I tried it out anyway. I only managed a suborbital arc, which backed up my theory side. Of course there could be many things to explain this. You could be 'cheating', and there are many ways it could be done. Or plain trolling, just lying for the fun of it. Or I could be far, far worse at this game than I thought I was, In which case I would ask you to share step by step instructions on how to fly this thing So tell us, what is your secret? ;D -
Requesting a flight to the Mun base please. I think I\'ll be flying in a three-man capsule, but with only one pilot. Then anyone who wants to come visit my ship can do so This base will be so much more fun with EVA\'s.

Is this the smallest Mun lander possible in 0.16? With the new way the engines work, they are far less efficient than they were, so much more fuel is needed. 7 tanks in total for this one, in 15.2, only 3 tanks were needed. This one uses the Toroidal aerospike engine, whcih I think is overpowered as it has a much higher thrust to weight ratio than the other engines. It\'s already very efficient, it should be heavy to balance out it\'s efficiency. It will probably be changed soon. Anyway give it a go and try improving on it if you want. Perhaps using jet engines early on would reduce the mass of the overall rocket?

The EZ MiniMun IIEB lander has landed at the Minmus north pole. This rocket was a modification by closette to my own design, which can be found here along with some other designs: http://kerbalspaceprogram.com/forum/index.php?topic=13953.msg216527#msg216527 Oh and also I accidentally bumped into your ship, zekes, which moved it a little. I hope you don\'t mind.

How close to the poles must we get? Just reaching the ice?

Very efficient rocket + lander! no mods used!
Apotheosist replied to mivanit's topic in KSP1 The Spacecraft Exchange
The smallest rocket I\'m aware of that can get to either the Mun or Minmus and come back is my three-tank ship, 'The Bare Minimun II'. It requires extremely efficient piloting, but once used to flying it regular trips are possible, and it\'s great fun http://kerbalspaceprogram.com/forum/index.php?topic=13953.0 -
I am going camping also. With Duke of Edinburgh. Leaving tomorrow. I will be back saturday about 1 o clock I think. Just in case my turn comes up.

Optimal Descent (to the Mun)

@JellyCubes, thanks for the map, just what I needed I think I will try to land there now. -
Optimal Descent (to the Mun)
Apotheosist replied to Tarmenius's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
I\'m going to update my score from some attempts I just made. This time I tried using a reverse gravity turn type descent from a low periapsis, and I managed 153.8kg of fuel left. I like the concept of renaming Kerbal units of mass, but I don\'t like 'ish' myself. It is very Kerbal sounding, but I fear the confusion it may cause. -
Optimal Descent (to the Mun)

Wow, the progress being made is fantastic! It\'s a pleasure reading these posts . I have tried getting a very low periapsis inside a deep crater, to cancel out my horizontal velocity as close as possible to the mun. Hasn\'t gone too well. Now I see landing on a mountain may be more efficient? @Jellycubes, that landing spot looks perfect! Is there any chance of an image or two showing the location you landed at? -
I\'m so excited about Skylon. And the fact it\'s British. We really need this to work. It would be awesome.

A friend recently told me about a new magazine 'All About Space', which is basically about what the cover says. It has some brilliant high definition pictures in it, articles about future rockets and missions etc, astronomy guides and so forth. My mum got it for me yesterday. Seems like a good read for anyone interested in anything space related. Just thought I\'d post about it here to spread the word. It\'s the first issue also, so I\'m glad I didnt miss it. If your\'e interested, look it up, or if you have it maybe you could share your thoughts about it. Basically anything about this magazine, you can post here. Also here\'s a link to an online article about the new magazine: http://www.howitworksdaily.com/news/all-about-space-on-sale-today/

Optimal Descent (to the Mun)
Apotheosist replied to Tarmenius's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
This is the best I\'ve had so far: 148.7 kg. If I remember correctly, I waited until apoapsis, (the initial orbit was ever so slightly elliptical, probably hardly made a differnece really) then retro burned until my periapsis was about as low as I dared go, then at periapsis I retro burned again to bring periapsis down to about 1k. I then coasted for a while, slowly losing altidude, and all the time I was looking for a suitable landing spot. I went into a crater, and it didn\'t look like I\'d make it over the rim the other side. So I decided to completely cancel my horizontal velocity there, then align myself vertiacally, wait for a bit, retro burn at the very last second, then turn off engines while still moving down with a few m/s of velocity, letting my landing legs absorb the last of my downward velocity. -

This is an excellent challenge. I had thoughts about creating a similar one myself. I shall give this a go right away -
@gyro2death, I\'m very sorry if I seemed rude, and looking back at my post now, I understand what you mean. I did not intend to be rude, I am all for constructive criticism, which I was aiming for, but I veered off too much to the criticism side. I appreciate the effort being made to build efficient rockets, and would like to contribute to the effort. This way we can all learn from one another. Once again, apologies for my inapropriate post.

I\'m not satisfied that any of the designs I\'ve seen here are very efficient at all. I see a lot of extra mass and staging sequences I dont think are very efficient. The title 'The most fuel efficient super lifter' seems misleading to me. I may of course be wrong. I will try build an efficient heavy lifter rocket of my own.

I would like to see other people try this mission with my spaceship. I flew to the Mun, returned to Kerbin, flew to the Mun again and returned to Kerbin again. If you find you can\'t fly efficiently enough to do the Mun mission, perhaps you could try Minums Please post pictures of your results. Good luck Since I have already posted about the ship with pictures of the mission, I will give the link to that post instead of putting the ship and all the pictures here again. Here is the link to the ship and pictures: http://kerbalspaceprogram.com/forum/index.php?topic=14805.msg223564#msg223564

What is the name of the piece of music used in the video please?
-
A wonderful minimalist design I tried it out and decided to modify the landing gear. It is now easier to take off with and should be much less impossible to land . I have managed to land it.
-
The Double MiniMunshot has landed at the base on Minmus, with enough fuel to return to kerbin, and fly back to the Mun or Minmus, and go back to kerbin again. There was some lag as I approached. What\'s the max craft allowed in one base? Oh and also, book me for another flight please.

[Stock] Double MiniMunshot
Apotheosist replied to Apotheosist's topic in KSP1 The Spacecraft Exchange
@Analogy, Thanks! And yes, I have considered using the structural pylon, however I prefer using the usual decouplers as I am familiar with them, and it allows my craft to be more easily compared to/used with earlier versions of the game. It\'s Just a thing. I\'m not a big fan of the new stock parts @sss, Thanks for the feedback regarding the story! Glad you like it
