I did not realize you could see the ISS by eye

And this website tells you where to look

http://spaceflight.nasa.gov/realdata/sightings/

9:15pm (eastern) tonight for me :D

I\'m going to bring my telescope too to see if I can manage to get it in my sights. It will only be see-able for 3 minutes though, so my hopes aren\'t high, but it has been done before.

I\'m really excited. Now I just need to figure out which direction 10degrees southwest is >_>

Apparently, we have an ISS sighting tonight! ;D

I wish I had a telescope...

I think someone once listened to the radio of the ISS as it passed overhead.

Yeah, it\'s a hobby of HAM operators to contact the ISS. My friend\'s uncle did it once.

I have an old old old telescope from when I was ~7

I used it to look at the moon a while ago, it was pretty nifty I must say.

I know someone who\'s trying to become a photographer (well, she already is an amazing photographer) so I\'ve sent her an offer of $200 to capture an image of it. We\'ll see how it turns out :D

I\'m definitely at least watching it by eye tonight

If you have a smartphone, download the Skyview app so it guides you on the sky!

I wish I had GPS on my tablet.

I wounder what else you can see by eye...

Can see the cloud belts of Jupiter.

I WIN THE GAME

On topic: If you\'re at a low enough altitude, the ISS does regular passes.

And if you\'re in the US/Canada, use this: http://spaceweather.com/flybys/ Displays the \'brightness\', time, all that jazz, for sat flybys.

How much does one of those things cost?

I\'m an amateur astronomer I\'ve only seen the moon and some satellite...

(Probably a GPS satellite)

In general, I\'d say that nights on which you have the opportunity to sight the ISS (assuming weather permits) are slightly more common than nights on which you don\'t have the opportunity to sight the ISS.

The Chinese space station, Tiangong-1 can get pretty bright. Not as bright as the ISS can get, of course, but enough to be fairly easily spottable by eye in bright locations.

And Iridium Flares can get brighter than Venus. Venus can get up to magnitude -4.6, and I\'ve seen nighttime flares as bright as -7. Haven\'t managed to see one in daylight yet, though.

I remember when the ISS passed directly overhead on the 4th of July, just seconds before the fireworks display started. It was awesome.

I remember that one time I was listening to the radio and the ISS passed right over my house...

It would be cool if we heard their encrypted channel communications.

All I got was a static transmission...

They probably weren\'t transmitting. Next time try the DIGIPEATER on 145.8250 MHz. This transmits a tone every so often, it could be:

Someone else transmitting there contact OR just the text 'International Space Station.'

Yes, I listen to space quite often.

It\'s been a while but I used to take \'images\' of the ISS through my telescope using a webcam. It was an interesting challenge. Here is a selection of my better shots. Hopefully I will be able to start doing this stuff again sometime in the near future..

  • 4 weeks later...

(And another necro. Run, the fox is making zombies!)

You know, there was a commercial for... either Boeing or Lockheed-Martin, I can\'t remember which, that got a lot of airplay in the mid-to-late 90s, shortly before construction of the ISS began, and I wish I could find it online somewhere.

It showed a lot of the assembly work that was going on to build modules for the ISS, then a shot of someone looking up and watching a satellite pass over, followed by a CGI camera move rushing up to show that the satellite was a completed ISS, looking back down at the Earth, and then simply four words: 'You Will See It.'

While I haven\'t been lucky enough to catch a sighting yet, I\'m sure I eventually will--the station is brighter in the night sky than Venus, making it the brightest object other than the Sun and Moon...
