The new and improved ASAS is way better than before.

If the next update was 0.91, I would say no, not a good use of resources. But this should definitely be done in version 1.0

I must have missed something. Since when the next update is .91 and not 1.0?

I played an earlier version recently (the old ASAS), I was amazed at how the rocket just locked in position when I hit "t." Now the SAS just flops.

Imagine, being a SSTO builder, having to go from the old SAS, that rewarded structurally sound spaceplanes with just the right amount of control surfaces, and switching to the new one where you need twice the minimum control authority, even though you don't really need it to fly by hand. I don't have to remember, because I lived through it and it killed all my best designs. So bittersweet (it was nice seeing planes not jittering all over the place in stable flight, after all).

Then I may be misstating what I'm asking for, or agreeing with something I am misunderstanding.

What I want is a system that does NOT, when you're in space and click "hold prograde," do the following:

  1. Slowly accelerate rotation toward prograde (which it doesn't even do but that's a different topic IMO), not using all the available torque.
  2. At the halfway point, keep accelerating toward prograde.
  3. At prograde, keep accelerating toward it, causing the ship to swing wildly past it, usually several times before slowly getting what I wanted in the first place and could have done myself in a single motion.

And if it could NOT shimmy-shimmy-shake the ship apart when I ask it to hold prograde, that would be a bonus.

Hear hear! Yeah, I think the new autopilots use some weird control algorithm more similar to the good old SAS... which got shelved for a reason. In any case, WiP I guess.

Rune. The pile of fixes for 1.0 is HUGE.

Annoyingly, MechJeb's Smart ASS performs perfectly in all the scenarios you listed :/

If only there was a 0.91 release tomorrow that had them in it :)

So I have hacked together a way of making things a lot more stable (once the target is reached that is. It's quite horrific over long distances). Comparing RCS usage, stock's prograde hold vs. my edited version is consuming greater than an order of magnitude more RCS

What did I do? Forced it to use the stability assist mode and just updated it's target...

Square wheel indeed...

Regarding planes, I dislike SAS for them anyway. You can't do a proper turn with it because when you bank the plane SAS actively fights to keep going straight.

^^

If you have to do it stock, SAS is next to useless for planes. Trim and be done with it
