Hello! I've recently entered the Elcano Challenge, which involves circumnavigating a body by land and sea (if applicable) only. I chose to enter this challenge on Kerbin and will be using a vehicle I designed for the race.

My plan is to head westward from KSC, and stick as close as possible to the equator. While this vehicle is amphibious, it uses significantly more fuel on water than land, so I will be choosing routes with the least amount of water as possible.

It runs off of Liquid Fuel, and when it runs out, I send a jet to re-fuel it.

I've decided that my quicksave/quickload rules are thus:

- Come to a full stop and quicksave every 20 minutes, or

- Quicksave after repairing a tire.

- If the vehicle is too damaged to continue, revert to last quicksave.

I'll be updating this thread as I go along.

TAC Life Support

USI Kolonization

Extraplanetary Launchpads (EL)

Infernal Robotics

Kerbal Engineer

Kerbal Alarm Clock

Kerbal Attachment System

TweakScale (used heavily in design of vehicle)

Hullcam VDS (for selfies and on-board views)

-and possibly a few others I've forgotten-

Total Stats (start to finish)

- Broken Tires: 34

- Quickloads: 30

- Refuels: 22

- Naps: 9

Ummm, might be time to design a refueling jet that can land in water.

I've got a few ideas on how to get around that little hurdle ;)

Also: Part 2 has been posted! Landin journeys through the desert, and Jeb learns to land without crashing!

Interesting. I like the design of your jet-powered quad bike and the VTOL refueling jet. What mods are you running? I can see DPAI, EL, IR, TAC LS, KER, KAC, and what I think is ScanSat. Not sure what the parachute icon is. Maybe Stage Recovery or RealChutes? And I remember you mentioning that you were using Tweakscale.

Thanks! I added a modlist to the original post.

As for the chute icon, I think that's part of the USI Kolonization, I think used to transfer resources or something to that effect. :)

I found refuelling with KAS on water that when you switch to docked to move the fuel they drift slightly and the cable goes tight and it can pull the two craft together, because they're one craft and can clip each other one drifts inside the other and gets stuck. I had to abandon a water circumnavigation attempt a while back and redesign all the fuel stations with the cable above on an out-rigger so there was no way the crafts could touch, just though I'd mention that as it's a terrible way to end a leg of the journey. Good luck :)

Hm, never would have anticipated that! I haven't had to do any on-water refuels yet, but I'll keep that in mind when I do :)

Looks like you're at or just beyond the half way point.

I think, now that I've completed Part 4, that I'm basically halfway around. Should be smooth going for the next few segments, as it'll be mostly land.

Anywho, Part 4 is now online! Check it out!

Great update, I know one or two things about island hopping too *bro fist*

*Brofist* Thanks, dude. I like the way you went about it. I might try something similar in my next attempt :) (And yes I'll probably be doing another circumnavigation once this one's done :P)

Sorry guys, no update today! I got a little distracted by another game I was playing :P

I should be posting my next update on Monday. :)

How do you get the KER windows to turn into HUDs?

Well, kinda hard to explain in words, but basically, you mouse over the KER tab in the upper-right (while following a vessel). From there, you should see some buttons. The one you want is at the bottom (I believe) and says something like "Make a new window/box/something". You click on that and it brings up a dialog box where you choose which stats will be shown, and you can choose to have it in a box (like the regular KER window) or in HUD-style, like you've seen on my sceenies.

Hope that helps!

Why not build a seaplane?

Because the intent it to travel it by land and sea. By air is too simple... much easier to attain and maintain higher speeds, less issue with water, etc. etc.

If you mean why didn't I build one for Jeb to refuel Landin with, well, Jeb REALLY wanted to try landing that VTOL in the water, and now that he's done it successfully, I don't think I can get him into a different vehicle!

Because the challenge is to circumnavigate a planet or moon by land or sea. Not by air.

Yep, exactly!
