100% Stock, fully functional Submarine with transport ship.

This is a 100% stock, fully functional submarine. It can reach the deepest corners of Kerbin's sea bed without cheats of any kind. Each engine on the back of the submarine is set to a specific thrust limit to balance the ship, just fire it up and let it go.

It comes with its own transport ship, a beautiful catamaran that can reach speeds over 95 m/s over water. It could go faster, but it will disintegrate if you push it over 100 m/s, that's the resistance limit of the air intakes used as floating devices.

This submarine was designed for a challenge on the forums, the challenge specified that the submarine needed a Claw to attach itself to the ocean floor. Of course the claw won't work on Kerbin's surface, but I added it anyway just to comply with the rules. If you want to substitute the claw inside the cargo bay behind the cockpit with another fuel thank, just go ahead.

If you manage to do something cool with it, please share it here.

I made a gif with my first attempt, it's called "Fantastic Voyage to the bottom of the oh crap!"

 That thing is pure class, kind of reminded me of this:

No need to thank me now.

Cupcake...

I'll thank you as much as I wish, you are not my mother and I can do whatever I want.

And speaking of classic sci-fi submarines, I had the beautiful "Proteus" from "Fantastic Voyage" in my mind every single step of the build, what a machine.

I'm going have to sit down now and watch the Fantastic Voyage in its entirety and it's all your fault. I hope you're happy.

Well, I just found out that submarines as it turns out, are really easy to make.... Here is the SuperNut 1 (Don't know where the SuperNut came from, maybe because the idea of a flying submarine rover is super nuts?). After you wait for the engines to spool up, it manages a rather nice 8 or so m/s downwards. I use Stock Revamp for the graphics, but besides that its 100% stock

Right now, the only way to actually get it to the water is with HyperEdit... SuperNut 1.1 is going to get that 'rover' part of the project done. SuperNut 1.2 should then be a submarine plane rover, and finally SuperNut 1.3 should be a more refined version for public release. That is of course, assuming that I don't go nuts (Pun intended) trying to get SuperNut 1.2 working.

The easy part is out of the way, now the hard part.

Once I add wings to this sucker, I have a really bad feeling Im gonna get a case of moar boosters.

Dude, you should submit that thing to the challenge. I wanna see how deep that thing gets!

This is awesome. Wooks you amaze as always.

I foresee this starting an underwater arms race in the military threads :)

Finally we can make stock Nuclear subs all thanks to Wooks

we have all tried that at the RB section but to no avail- it's too slow once underwater about 3-4 m/s and missiles are too part heavy to sink down with reasonable number of engines. maybe when the new cargo bay module comes out we could do that if it will also shield from water physics but i doubt it

Cool one, it will fit inside the cargo bay of my Executor Class Submarine, right in front of the ballistic missiles bay. Care to share the download link?

It can be done, but the level of dificulty increases exponentially:

WIP, still working on balance and buoyancy, and later on aesthetics.

Still working in efficiency issues, this monster eats fuel like there is no tomorrow because air breathing engines won't cut it for the size of this thing. Speed of travel over and under water is a serious issue but I believe is possible to do something about it.

That thing wouldn't survive a day in my Kerbin. (or Elad's Kerbin).

^^^ yep...it's not that i dismiss your design skills it's just we (andrew and i and a whole lot of other RB players) have a RP forum or ourselves and we desire range, speed and fire power. i had a ship that could go 10 m/s and submerge but it couldnt carry and missiles so i scrapped it

Where is that RP forum you speak of, I desire to peruse it.

About missiles: those in the picture are a couple boosters strapped with reaction wheels and a small probe, they work pretty well launching from surface or underwater. What kind of missiles you use?

more complicated missiles 12 parts each with 220 Km range at the least. the problem is not the missiles the problem is a sub that can stay submerged and have a decent speed and range while carrying at least 3 missiles

You will be assaulted by eXplore co and the NG mutants.

Really nice work, love the sub and catamaran. Question - your sub has 13 vertical engines, which you said each are thrust limited. So out of a total of 1300%, what is your total % used?

This is what I ended up with:

Untitled.png

Of course this was the solution for the original challenge design with a cargo bay and a claw inside, a more compact version like the one Citizenaerospace made certainly will be less complex and do the trick as well.

If you're still wondering on the type of warships we build, here's some pictures of my now retired and outdated KDX-III. She was a fine ship, but would never survive the modern battlefield.

Next to my old Burke Class.

Those are very cool concepts indeed, how you manage the part count? you weld the parts?

We never weld parts. No mods of any sort are tolerated.

And those were not concept ships. They were fully deployed.
