What happens to posts that are reported?

I just wanted to ask about what happens to a user when their post is reported. I wanted to get the attention of a moderator after seeing a post that utterly bashed one's username, but I just wanted misunderstandings clarified, instead of causing infractions to that user.

Is reporting the correct action for this, or should I just wait until a moderator comes and sees?

As far as I know when you report a post it is marked on a list and moderators receive a message similar to a PM. Once the problem is dealt with it is removed from the list.

If reports here are anything like other forums I've seen, all a report inherently does is notify moderators that something might be a problem; the actions taken are decided independently by the moderation team just like if they'd seen the issue themselves (aside from reports like "this is my thread, can you please close it").
