So I just finished Portal 2! Pretty good ending, although I personally prefer Still Alive as an ending song.

Would you recommend me buying Half Life or its sequels? Would someone who liked Portal and Portal 2 also like Half Life?

Edit: Here's a video of a GlaDOS lamp for your viewing pleasure:

Personally I didn't understand the hype at all. The first took my interest for a bit, but then the horrible FoV made me feel ill and I never played it again. HL2 just seemed a standard FPS. Mechanically sound, and I enjoyed throwing toilets around with the gravity gun but it just felt like a gimmick really. Nothing particularly special or memorable about it. I'm not really a FPS fan and it didn't do anything to change my mind.

I really loved Portal though. One of the best games I've ever played. Portal 2 was very good, but maybe a bit bloated by comparison. And "Still Alive" is indeed the superior ending song. Possibly my favourite song in video gaming. Either that or Snake Eater.

I am actually going to play through the HL games very soon, just decided on how.

The Half-Life: Source version is not good. Valve cut some things from the original, and its just unpolished.

So What I plan to do is play "Black Mesa" basically a fan remake that is

but since:

The first of two releases of Black Mesa is currently available free for download. This release includes over 8 hours and 14 chapters of gameplay. The final release, via steam, is under development.

some of the final levels are not finished yet, so I'll just use console commands to skip right to where Black Mesa ends, and play the original to its end.

Then since Half-Life 2:Update just released a few days ago, I will play that version of the game, before moving to the 2 episodes.

Im excited. I've never played HL1 myself.

What I like most about Half-Life, is that it's not some standard shooting-gallery-fest like most FPS that came before it.

It has a good story and seamlessly blends that with the superb game-play.

Plus, you're not some hulking marine...

The two best mods ever made for Half-Life (HL1) were DoD (Day of Defeat) and CS (Counter Strike). DoD was, and still is, my favorite game.

Anybody play CS Portable??? It's pretty much a port from the original CS. Yes - I play, same name as here.

As for Portal, never played it; But I do like the end scenes and music/songs. lol

I remember playing Half-Life when it was current, it blew my mind.

I only got around to playing Half-Life 2 a couple of years ago, and frankly I wasn't that impressed. On it's reputation alone, I'd recommend picking up HL2 if you're curious, but I'd definitely wait for a sale. It's a cautious recommendation, based solely on the fact that it is generally considered one of the defining pieces of gaming history, but IMHO that's as far as it goes. I'm happy to have it in my library, but there are a lot of FPS games that I've enjoyed far more.

Portal 1 & 2 are solid games though, although I agree, Still Alive was a far better song. Want You Gone just wasn't as catchy, and just seemed to be included because they needed an end song, because Portal.

Frankly I'd be more hyped for Portal 3 than Half Life 3.

I love portal 2. It was so awesome and was so well made. The gameplay, atmosphere, plot, and music was great.

It was worth the day and a half download time. (I had the xbox 360 version)

Also I WANT THAT LAMP SO BAD!! It looks amazing.

Also also, going to try black mesa tonight. I watched a series called freemans mind a few months ago that was recorded in the original half life, so it will be cool to see the improvement's.

I got Portal in the exact circumstances you recommend for HL2: it was on sale, it was a classic, eh why not
