Mk1-2 Command Pod heat shield

Recommended Posts

I personally disagree with integrating a heat shield into the base Mk 1-2 model.

Although it is true that improved re-entry heating effects will be implemented in 1.0, there may be situations where the Mk 1-2 pod shouldn't have a heat shield at the bottom (e.g. stacked onto a Hitchhiker crew cabin as part of an interplanetary transfer vehicle). Having a separate heat shield part offers much more flexibility in vessel designs.

One thing I've noticed when using the MK1-2 heat shield DRE provides is that while it fits the pod perfectly, it doesn't quite fit other parts (which can be annoying).

If a MK1-2 heat shield is implemented, Squad needs to either (a) provide both a MK1-2 and a standard 2.5m heat shield, or (B) Change the MK1-2 module so that a 2.5m shield fits perfectly.

I completely agree. There's this SDHI mod made by some guy that shows exactly how it should be done.*

Personally I prefer a heat shield that's just part of the model. It makes the Mk1 look good and that's still as versatile aesthetically as it would've been without a heat shield. So I wouldn't mind the same approach to the Mk 1-2. While we're at it, just throw the entire old model out of the window and center the window, make windows that'll work well with a revised IVA, etc.

I'd like to see no moving between modules with heat shields between them, too.

That's not necessary. Both the VA/TKS spacecraft and a test version of the Gemini spacecraft had hatches in the heatshield, allowing the crew to move through.

I was unaware of that, cool. Then the models should at least show that… would it compromise the heat shield at all? Perhaps require slower reentry (orbital, vs translunar velocities)?
