What Are Things You've Heard That Made You Facepalm?

Ugh, in the comment threads of classical pieces in YouTube, I encounter so many people saying that they were born in the wrong generation, today's music is so crap, and think they have a superior intellect just because they listen to, like one classical music piece.

I love these works, but if someone says they're smarter than today's generation because of a preference.. I swear..

Well it was said before but it doesn't hurt to be said again "Never go in the comment section of any video"

How about the thousand of sudden specialist in [insert a topic here] just because they comment in a youtube video.

Forget facepalm.

Face-rock. Repeatedly. That's even worse then the pyramids on mars.

Curiosity: Rock, rock, rock, rock, oh look another rock.

People: Pyramid! Spaceship! Restaurant! Noah's ark!

the last two were satire but I wouldn't put it past people.

Oh squad, not Starbound, every time I play it ends up with me checking out an RP server, everytime it's stupid drama queens and people threatening to kill peoples characters for stupid reasons, even if it's RP. "Hi, didn't know Hylotl's were warlord BadS's!" "umg don't insult me like that! So racist! I will kill you!"

OK.... I swear this just happened and my head almost exploded.....

The local morning news is on, and they're talking about some movie... I don't know what, I'm not a big movie fan, but one of the guys said something to the extent of

"He didn't come back from Mars because a storm caused a big rock to fall on him".

And the weatherman.... WEATHERMAN.... replied, "That's impossible, there can't be storms, Mars doesn't have an atmosphere."

I'll be carrying the resulting facepalm bruise for a week....

Well, for the purposes of that discussion, it might as well not have an atmosphere. Its atmosphere can lift up small sand grains, but certainly not boulders. i myself started a thread in the science forums criticizing the idea that the force of the wind would get strong enough to cause the problems they portray, when the atmospheric density is about 1% that of Earth's.

Stood inline today in Radio Shack and the person ahead of me was returning a laptop.

The reason was they were unable to get online.

The problem they were having is for some reason the laptop they purchased was requiring a password to connect.

After some investigation by the Radio Shack employee it was discovered the customer did not have an internet provider and was using their neighbor's.

The customer did not understand and accussed Radio Shack fraud because they were sold a computer that required them to pay more to connect to the internet.

The reason they got a new laptop was because their old one was unable to connect for the same reason. Which they also blamed Radio Shack for.

Wow, just wow... how did that end, did any bystanders speak up and defend radio shack?

Did they understand by the end, or turn into even more of a raving lunatic?

Why. Just why.

Look at the video's thumbnail. Look at these distances. Fine math was involved.

Pluto's orbit > Jupiter's orbit.

A cursory look through other videos from the same channel gave me the impression that this was the tamest one out there.

I say let's not watch anything from that channel lest our faces suffer damage from our own palms.

An actual conversation with a freshman (first year, first semester) college student:

  • College student: I'm really not sure why I am being made to take your F------ college course. After all, history never changes.
  • Me: It is because western higher education is based on the Greek model; it is to provide you a well-rounded education. And yes, history, or at least our understanding of it, can change as we learn new facts about it.
  • College student: Still, the Greeks are all dead, it's the study of history that killed them...
  • Me: Well, if I use your logic, the Roman Republic collapsed because they were forced to study Latin...
  • College student: Romans spoke Latin? I thought they spoke Romulan...
  • Me: No, not Romulans, but Romans...
  • College student: You mean there really were Romans?

Oh, yeah, week number two. Only 14 weeks to go and is it going to be a long 14 weeks...

I don't even...

From a Nerd3 live stream:

"Someone in the chat is saying that Unix is better than Mac. You've got it wrong, just saying!" I am of course referring to what the person in the chat was saying.

Fruit seeds are better than fruit!

I have a friend who is a total Linux boffin. He's bored at the mall while his girlfriend is shopping, so he wanders into an Apple store and sits down at a Mac. After a minute or so, he gets himself into a Bash prompt and starts poking around. A sales drone comes around and shoulder surfs him for a minute, and then he says, "Wow! You sure know Macs!" Well, actually....

I'm having this conversation with a random guy on Google+ / Youtube :

(it's in french so i'm giving a short translation)

Guy : a rocket could not lift off from a Lunar base because combustion is only possible when oxygen is present.

Me : you are confusing rocket and jet engines. A rocket brings its own oxygen along the way.

Guy : yes, but not enough. To lift off, the engines need air to produce more thrust. Once it's in space the rocket can travel with its less powerful engines because travelling in a vacuum is easy. The thrust [yes he saud thrust -_-] needed to get into low orbit is hundreds of times higher than the thrust needed to travel into space. [then he gives me some BS example of throwing an object on the surface of the earth vs throwing it in a gravity-less vacuum]

Me (after a few facepalms) : the oxygen in the ambient air does not react with the fuel and therefore is not used to produce thrust in any way. Rockets actually perform better in a vacuum. You are confusing DeltaV and thrust here. You can go anywhere with a very low thrust, but you can't go anywhere with a tiny dV budget.

Guy : engines don't need the ambient air but liftoff thrust is optimal only when air is present. it's like the helix that propels the boat. [this is probably the worst analogy ever] The air doesn't react in the engine but gives the engine more thrust.

Me (facepalming harder than ever) : How could you get more thrust from the engines thanks to air if the air does not react with them ? This is completely confused !

[i provide schemes of engines to show him that there is no air. I also provide him specs of various engines, with the sources from the rocket builders (Aerojet-Rocketdyne, Safran, orbital ATK... etc] See? rocket engines have higher Isp and higher thrust in a vacuum than in a pressurized environment.

I'm "waiting" for his answer... and i triple curse the awful physics teacher that this guy must have had. (unless it's a 6-years old lil' boy haha)

Maybe it is time you introduce this person to the Kerbal Space Program... :D

Oof, that must have hurt.

Fan-ta-stic ! Too bad memes aren't allowed...

Thanks! Actually, we have a thread for that! Anyway, only Messages that only contain images in response to a certain subject dependent to the context of the thread (ie. reaction images) are prohibited, if you have something to add in addition to a meme (Of course, all other rules apply too) it's okay.

the past few days I've been working on a motor cross event. Before I say the bad stuff, lets start with something good. I LOVE THIS WORK

But in our track we give the riders a choice halfway through the track. A heroes and a zeroes choice. The heroes choice is shorter but has obstacles

20140830-145013-Medium.jpg

This year we did a complete new track. So we had to re think how to build the heroes and the zeroes tracks.... As it turned out. The zeroes track is faster than the heroes track. One of my ideas was to calculate the distances on the pieces of track with no obstacles. which meant calculating the corners in the tracks.

Whilst I wrote down some numbers I used À (pi) to calculate the distance variable between the inner and the outer corners.... Which was to weird of a number for some people to stop me 'making stuff up'.

Needless to say, the zeroes track is still shorter...
