Needs some canards in the front, col is a bit far back and its a bit heavy with FAR. Probably as like delta wing is now 0.4t, even reduced to minimum required strength. Cant really get it high with this wing, it cant pull the nose up at about 8km. Probably the main control surfaces are too close to the CoM or something.

So many changes that its basically a different craft. It just makes it to 70km orbit with FAR.

Thread ratings have been a long-time pet peeve of mine. That function is so unknown and underused that any one person rating a thread can have a huge say, it only works really to signify high-quality, long-lasting threads, not anything new.

Yeah i know there are like 3 people who normally vote on threads lol and its normally only the ones worth giving 5 stars that get it, why hurt someones feelings by rating their thread as 1 star after all?

So it is fairly obvious when someones being a douche on the exchange. (Well this is back at 3 stars anywho)

Good work on this Rune! I have tried (and failed) to make a MK3 SSTO.. Ho hum, looks like you have it well covered though!

Thanks! The trick is... well, the trick is a lot of fiddling, really, and keeping Mk3 part usage (especially dense tanks!) to a minimum. Or, like here, you put just a couple and use a huge low-density bay to even out the density of the final thing. Then you spam wings like there is no tomorrow, and hope it's enough...

Oh yeah, of course the canards. Mine actually has them, two pairs in fact, only hidden and taking advantage of the current aerodynamics. They have only slightly more lever than the rear control surfaces, though, because the CoM is right in the middle of the ship. Still, if you took them out, moving the wing forwards should re-balance the CoL slightly... that's one of the reasons having the whole wing hanging off the front strake is useful. But you know, in the end, it's a stock design, so it's only reasonable it wouldn't fly in FAR (>25% more weight in powerplant can't help, too). And I still maintain that nuke is probably cutting into your in-orbit delta-v, not adding to it.

Thanks for the kind comments (and the ratings! When I looked at it this morning the thread had four stars). But frankly... never gave two damns about them. The best indicator of how interesting a thread is, IMHO, is either the number of responses, or directly the OP's handle because I know so many of the really good builders by now (which, I'm not proud to say, may lead to me sometimes ignoring threads by less known people until they have more than one page of responses... I know, not cool :().

And it's also fairly obvious that 90% of the people don't use them anyhow, since a single vote changes things dramatically. If at least you had some short of vote count you could look at, you could detect troll votings at least.

In any case, thanks again for the interest and the comments, I'm glad this ship gave you all something to talk about, and perhaps a good idea or two.

Rune. The thing about Mk3 designs I like is, they have to be fundamentally simple to fly. Clip Mk3 tanks, and good luck taking off.

Im not a great pilot, but somehow this thing is stable enough untill I switch to mechjeb ascent at 8km, limiting the aoa...

Thing about the nuke is that while it is 2.5t, the whole craft is still only 33t dry without cargo. I had it lit up when I was turning on the rapiers at 1400ms (really a great ascent) and took a long way to orbit. I turned rapiers off a few times. Basically its for orbital maneuvers. Less fuel use for when you have to intercept a station.

I might just take that lander can out as it doesnt do anything. Then it will be 98 parts total.

As for adjusting wing position. One part is usefull, but then again you have to use more struts. I only have to move 5 parts and with the offset tool its easy.

Now I have to learn to land with FAR...

Tried out the Daring. I DARE to say (eheheheh) it is a slight bit better looking then the Intrepid. But I think the point is less about looks, although it is nice looking, and more about handling. I tried disabling SAS/RCS as with the Intrepid and this surprisingly handles much better. In fact, I think its as flyable with control assistance then without. TBH I really would like this to survive 1.0. Then again I WOULD like my modded colony to live but 1.0 has to come. Either way the Intrepid was an amazingly genius craft and the Daring makes it better. A small challenge though. With your recent Kraken drive ships, id like to see an SSTO that can carry a kraken drive into space, deploy it, and return safely. I gave it ago myself but the kraken drive is very hard to miniaturize. I guess its something to consider. With the far star hitting the market, id love to see something like that. As I was saying, great craft, great upgrade, great builder. Cheers as always Rune.

Well, you seem to have things well in hand. Good luck with the landings, and I hear airbrakes are kind of required!

Wow thanks! :blush: Comments like that really make my day. So much so, that the K-Drive request gets archived to try on 1.0, and if it doesn't work, I will probably just give you my 0.90 files as they are. They do include a 2.5m K-Drive assembly that fits in a Mk3 cargo bay. And don't worry, even if the Daring dies come 1.0, I will build something very much like it straight away and post it here for you guys. :)
