To have fun for a while - my Core2Duo survived with one graphics card update since 2008 until now - should it be

i7 and GTX980 with 16GB RAM ~1.700 EUR

or would

i5 and GTX960/4GB with 8GB RAM ~1.000 EUR

be sufficient?

The power of the GTX 960 is quite bad for its price (at least here in germany), you could get almost a R9 290 for that money which is way more powerfull.

An i5 is allways enough for gaming if you dont need the extra lanes of a X99 chipset.

Agreed - The R9 290 is a sweet spot for price to performance right now.

I got an i5 and gtx960 for Christmas for £1000ish and it definitely is enough. Heck, i can even play watchdogs :P

Ps. Watchdogs is like minecraft, no matter what specs you have it'll either run s**t or run at about 30fps. I see no difference between playing either on a 1.4ghz 4g ram (no gpu that i can make out) acer laptop, or my gaming pc.
