Land on the Mun using only SRBs and RCS (Stock parts)

Recommended Posts

Challenge - Lift off from Kerbal and land safely onto the Mun using only SRBs and RCS fuel/thrusters (this means no liquid fuel engines!)

Stock parts only, with the exception of MechJeb or Engineer if you want to use them, I know they make repeated launches / tweaking TWR easier.

I successfully completed this early this morning at around 4am...

Pics in spoilers...

The monstrosity that was my rocket...

SRBs alone got me into an orbit with a AP of 516KM and a PE of 106KM, from there it was RCS time...

TOUCHDOWN!!! Note how much RCS fuel I had left... I was running on fumes! Looks like this was a one way trip for the poor Kerbals!

This took about a dozen tries to get right, its not too bad getting to a Mun orbit using only SRBs and RCS, the hard part was getting into Mun orbit with most of a RCS tank left so I could land!

I really wanted to make a return trip with only SRB/RCS... but it is not to be, my computer is too slow to handle a rocket with 100s of SRBs and struts, I get about .5fps on launch.

My crew landed on their RCS tanks (to great fireworks) and were unfortunately left stranded on the Mun...

Yeah, but I remember reading somewhere that you need at least 2 full RCS tanks to make it back from the Mun.

I think I would have to add 2 more stages to be able to bring one booster on TMI. :(

A single solid-fuel rocket booster is also enough to get a capsule, decoupler, and chute from the surface of the Mun back to Kerbin, if you launch from near the trailing pole of the Mun.
