how do I add an option to my part?

I'm trying to develop a part and module that extends the ModuleDecoupler class from the stock version to include an "AutoDecouple" option that can be enabled/disabled in the ship editor via right-click menu but I've just begun modding for KSP I don't know how to add this.

EDIT: also, what's the best way to log module activity? I'd prefer to use the alt+f12 debug screen if posilble.

add a [KSPEvent] tag a to a public void in a PartModule. That's about it. And just use print() or Debug.Log().
