Overheating Stayputnik

Recommended Posts

Hi Forum,

I recently got 1.0 and experienced something strange:

The only mod I used is Kerbal Space Redux - this should not be a problem right?

The Stayputnik has some extreme overheating, which can only be experienced with convection heat turned on. It went up on even 8000 degrees! Even though it was not realy exposed into the airstream. Every other part seems to be fine. An the heatshild did its work. I had no problem with the rocket fliping around.

Does anyone have similar problems, or an idea what might be the problem?

Greetings,

Salad

Based on information in the KSP 1.0 change-log it is possible for heat to gradually transfer from one part of your craft to another. Also different parts have different cooling rates (take different amount of time to cool down).

So I guess Stayputnik might have low heat tolerance and pretty slow cooling speed.

@SilverWarrior: It's an idea, but the temperatures of the Stayputnik climbed and fell back over thousands within seconds. It was a really strange experience.

I narrowed the problem now: We have a convection heat of 491032 degrees. Shown in the picture above. This seems to be slightly too much :)

I forgot to mention, that I am using 110% heat, but 446393 is still a little too much.

I've been using RSS with ferram and deadly for a long time - and reentry was hard. But stock on 110% won't let me reenter at all, even with multiple reentries and capsules with offset center of mass and everything done right...

It'd help to know exactly when and where the probe got so hot as there's a lot of additional heating around mach2, also probes don't have a lot of thermal mass to spread heat around in, did you test any other probes?

The 8000 degrees happend on about 14000m as shown above. But I exeeded 1800 at around 25000 already. It strangely fell back somewhen in between and raised again and so on.

I meanwhile experienced too much heat for a reentry with a simple Mk1 Pod - heatshild, parachute and antenna and thermometer, as well.

It exeeded tempmax even on 50000m already:
