Is it common to be unable to deselect things? Is there a workaround?

Frequently I get the right-click information/menu for things I didn't select and I can't get rid of them, preventing me from transferring fuel between tanks. Does this happen to anyone else? Is there a key to automatically unselect everything?

It might be a bug but there's no point reporting it because I don't know how to reproduce it on demand. Switching to another craft and back works but it's a hassle.
