Engine Nacelle, Engine Pre-cooler and You (bug with cooling)

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone!

In Engine Pre-cooler description says: "Improves jet performance by pre-compressing and rapidly cooling the intake air". "Sounds cool" - I thought and started to test it.

The first qiuck test showed me that there is no difference ( http://i.imgur.com/MihTNHl.jpg ). "Okay" - I thought - "Maybe, if it was called "Pre-cooler", it will cools the engine?".

The second test showed that it heats up the engine! Engine and detals, that are close - http://i.imgur.com/LmTD4CU.jpg

Well, it's too synthetic test - I thought - it should be check on a normal plane. But all measurements showed that this part is heated engines! http://imgur.com/a/V0Nvl (Yes, it was a long flight)

Another point was detected in flight - ISP engine is not as specified. As you can see in the screenshots, when ISP = 19200 I could fly 11.5 hours. But after 20 minutes of flight time is rapidly reduced to 4.5 hours. I have no reason not to trust this mod, also from my own experience I know that 19k ISP is very much. It is almost 5 times more than the ion engine!

The next test that I did - check Pre-cooler with another engines, not jet. For the purity of experiment I chose the most hottest engine - LV-N.

The test showed that the bug is observed with other engines. Not only on surface, in space too (paradoxically). http://imgur.com/a/ptsXG

That's all I additionally checked without mods, i got the same result.

All this is tested on KSP 1.0, Win 8.1 x64.

P.S. I'm not an English speaker, sorry for any errors.

Used to be able to drag the nacelles over rockets and it would surround the engines with fairings and cool them. Is there a reason they changed that too?

It's just an intake/fuel tank combination, it is the old radial engine body with a new model and texture.

The only cooling effect is that it provides somewhere for engine heat to pass to.

Thanks for clearing that up, I think there's a lot of people wondering about it :) But if that's the case, this part is poorly named and giving the impression that it doesn't something which it doesn't :/ Intake air is so rarely the problem now that it's a pretty pointless part without any actual cooling effect, imho... Oh well, least I know to leave it off things now.
