Antenna will not extend ?

Recommended Posts

It may be a clipping problem. Antenna need free space to deploy and you got a strut very close to it. Since the 3 other are in the same configuration it should work but there is maybe a very tiny difference of position. I had a problem with a Mun lander and had to close the service compartment to use the antenna which was right under the doors level.

Have you transmitted science? I am willing to bet you have.

Once you transmit science, your antenna will go into "locked" mode and you will not be able to extend it manually. The one that wont open for you was the one used to transmit.

You are right, I did.

What happens if I extend them all then transmit ? Will one of them be stuck in retracted position again ?

Hi I have had This issue as well and it seems that I can extend them manually before I transmit, but after I transmit for the first time the antenna becomes permanently unable to be expanded manually (by right-click). No idea why this happens, really annoys me. >:(

I relaunched, because it bothers me, but now I sent a science vessel to Mun and Minmus, got back to my LKO Lab and filled it to max. I guess once I get 500 science it will randomly select one and kill my symmetry. Maybe I will just close the one across as compromise.

Yup. After transmission the one transmitting will retract and get locked again

It's pritty stupid, and I hope they fix this

In 0.90 the game always picks the "best" antenna to transmit your science and will continue to use that specific one for all future transmissions. The way around this is to right click the antenna you want to sacrifice and manually select "transmit data." But if use the science results screen to transmit, the game will go right back to the one it wants to use. I haven't spent much time playing with antennas in 1.0 yet so apologies if not 100% correct but it should be close. It used to bother me too but I just stopped caring. Usually have a primary and a backup antenna anyway for any unplanned ship disassembly.

I just noticed your flag is your avatar, awesome!

You can edit the persistent file for stuff like this, just copy the section for a different antenna into the one that is locked should work.

Well, lesson learned. Thank you everybody for the answers.

I will take a note for my Duna lab design. By that time I may have 300 spare science for communotron 88-88, but first I will set up the ore scanners.

I had this issue too, but after switching vessels or after some warptime i could extend all antennas. but i don't know how i did it exactly. it may as well had something to do with the action group,

transmitting data and then abort or using another antenna manually to transmit data. It is definetly possible to extend all antennas, even after you an antenna to transmit science.

I love symmetric builds and i can enjoy my designs exactly as intended.

This is the reason that I can't install RemoteTech. I don't have action groups on my existing probes and they have transmitted data. This is very troubling and I would like a way to fix this. Would RT be able to fix this or do I need a way to handle it before I install RT? If I have to fix it before installing, how do I do this? :(

A workaround if this bothers you, something I do on most of my vessels: Bind an actiongroup to 'toggle' the antennae you want to be able to open and close at your discretion. That way, when one of them is closed by a science transmit (something that the game will not be consistent about, it can be any of them), you can activate the action key you set them to even when the rightclick menu doesn't work.

Usually what happens is the first time you hit the key, the still open antennae will close, the closed one(s) will do nothing. Second time you hit the action key, they will all open again in sync.

RemoteTech completely rejiggers the way antennas work.  I have no idea how it would interact with this (my guess is that it would be fine), but it's easy to find out-- make a copy of your KSP directory, install RT there, and try it out.  A safe and quick way to answer your question.  :)

That said:  Probe design (and your overall system design of all your various hardware) is a different thing in RemoteTech, and career progresses in a rather different fashion.  It's a fun mod and I highly recommend it, but I'd suggest just starting a new career with it rather than trying to retro-fit it into an existing career you're already running.

Also, may not be relevant, but if you recentl upgraded to 1.0.5 and have ScienceAlert mod installed, antenna no longer work correctly - (or, rather, science is no longer transmitted correctly)

It's also worth noting that KSP 1.1 will be coming out in a few weeks, and will be adding a "telemetry" feature quite similar to what RemoteTech does. I imagine that this will cause issues for RemoteTech; at the very least, I expect that it won't be compatible, would require substantial reworking to become compatible, and the reworked version may not be backwardly compatible with pre-1.1 RemoteTech.

All of which is just speculation on my part... just sayin' that right now might not be the best time to start using RemoteTech. May be a good idea to wait for 1.1 and then see what develops.

There is a workaround : use "action groups", you can always extend antenna with actions group, even if the options disapeared from the menu once it has been used.

I always add a "cosmetic action group" for such features. Antenna looks nicer when open.
