(OSX) Proper Fullscreen support

Recommended Posts

Unity 4.3 made a change in Mac Standalone Player: When in FullscreenWindow fullscreen, so there are 2 versions of "fullscreen" one with CMD+TAB, dock, menu autohidden and one which completely removes everything.

Are we able to currently switch between these 2 modes, and if not i suggest we give the user the choice.

A little background for this problem: When hovering your mouse at the top, mac osx title manu bar auto appears, which clutters and obstructs the ui of KSP.

This also happends in 7D2D which in turn is also running on Unity engine, but 5.0 version however.

There are quite a few ways of achieving that mac OS X hides the menubar and/or dock.

I've tried various (now unsupported) ways of achieving it, but alas this has to be hardcoded into the game, and recompiled.

The menu bar is only visible when you have the mouse touching the top of the screen. There are no KSP UI elements that require touching the top of the screen. I like being able to show the menu bar, as I can see the current time, my wifi status etc, and my battery.

There is the map/tracking station vessel filters....

But forcing KSP to mess with anyone's desktop would be a pretty big no-no, and the Unity engine probably doesn't even have functions for doing this.

Unfortunately Unity switched from a true fullscreen mode to a fullscreen window a few versions back (Unity, not KSP), you may want to try the Unity forums for help on forcing fullscreen but I don't think it's supported any more.

On OSX I just click "Fullscreen" in the settings and when it launches, it launches into a separate desktop with the menu bar hidden. Is this "Forcing fullscreen?" Or are you talking about the really annoying way that Spore (I don't play that many games, so this is the only reference I can find) just plastered itself all over your desktop, making it impossible to use any other apps? Why would anyone want that?

One thing I'd would strongly like to avoid is it switching to a mode that blocks cmd+tab, as some full screen apps are prone to doing (quite why the OS even allows that without the user granting permission or enabling it is beyond me). I too am annoyed by the current mode where the menu bar and dock can make an intrusive and unwanted appearance if your mouse strays a pixel or 2 too far. Given the choice, however, of cmd+tab being broken, or having to live with the current behaviour, I'd choose the current behaviour. I.e. correct function of cmd+tab is orders of magnitude more important to me than the irritation here. Ideally, I'd do away with the irritation while keeping cmd+tab functionality.
