Why I Don't Like 1.x

Recommended Posts

So basically be good Germans, is that it? Everything is connected to politics but by golly let`s never talk about it in case someone gets upset?

Yes, I do believe that is the point. It is unnecessary and often derails useful threads into heated flame wars, and locks.

As for the OP, had you been paying attention to the history of KSP, you may have realized that 0.90.0 was by no means the final product, and that everything was subject to change. And so it has. Here we all are, having a good time, re-living old failures, and successes.

Most of us, anyways. I'm sure you can find some way to get KSP fun again, or, you could simply go back to playing 0.90.0.

You're new here, perhaps you should familiarize yourself with our Community Rules. This is a video game forum, not a political one, and there is a fairly large mountain of evidence supporting the idea that discussing politics here leads to bad things. We try to maintain a friendly, helpful tone as much as possible and politics interferes with that. You can characterize it as censorship if you like, but there are many, many other places on the internet where you can get your fill of political discussion if you want, please take it there.

I see the main reason behind these posts are the restrictions imposed upon a player became stricter. Many people considered KSP is fun because it allowed to build and actually fly aerodynamic monstrosities never possible in real life. They built SSTOs with 15-25% payload weight ratio and did other similar things. Well, these are the very reasons I didn't like the old KSP and welcomed the new one. Science is hard, yes, but there is sandbox mode and I'm sure the economy is yet to be rebalanced several times. Generally KSP made a huge step forward with 1.0 and some minor balance issues (like overheating LV-Ns or 'not so deadly' reentry) are going to be solved in the nearest future, I'm sure. KSP breaks us off (bad) habits and we (some of us) don't like it. Personally, I wish physics in the game was even more unforgiving than it is now, but the one we've got in 1.0 is at least something.

The mod "ecosystem" has shifted slightly away from the folks who felt the need to mod the game to increase playability onto a very few folks who now feel the game needs to be untouched or reverted.

Frankly, it appears that the change has been successful in that a wider group of users now feel the game is better balanced - still not perfectly, but better.

There will always be outliers on any statistical curve - sadly the OP is one of them... I'm sympathetic to the disappointment that occurs when the game balance doesn't provide what you want. Welcome to the club of legacy users who decided to add mods to improve their play experience - its actually a nice place to be.

The uncanny valley. A rival of mine.

This is actually a very good description of what many people are encounting with the new update, not me though I think that it is very close to a very good sweet spot.

The uncanny valley. A rival of mine.

Exquisite distillation of the problem.

This is where I find myself. KSP 1.x is not realistic enough to scratch that itch for me, and it's no longer possible to achieve the same balls-out lunacy as before.

I'm either going to end up playing RSS/RO or writing a bunch of Module Manager files to try and recapture the madness, but I won't be playing stock any more.

Since I'm taking my fate into my own hands. Does anyone have a collection of "crazy" mods that are good, internally consistent, and play well with each other? The steampunk one looked cool.

1.0 has changed a lot of KSP's mechanics and balance, that's for sure.

This is my problem with 1.0. If the game mechanics and balance are changing, then it shouldn't be a 1.0 release - in fact, the changes mean that the game is still in Alpha! Every major change to game mechanics needs thorough testing. Squad already has a large group of testers, who have paid for the privilege - us. Let us do our part and test the changes. Why rush it out the door with new untested features? It is completely unnecessary. Squad has managed to take a four year development process - which with any other game would be considered "development hell" - and turned it into a cash cow. There was no need to go to full release yet, none at all.

The changes are largely welcome, particularly Ore. However, these changes also broke nearly all my mods, by changing the way the bottom node is handled (for starters).

Squad should take a step back, admit they are still in Alpha, and continue development of the game. Once they have the game mechanics solidified, then and only then should it go back to Beta. The Beta period should only be spent tracking down and killing bugs - without changing game mechanics! And then re-release the game - again without changes to game mechanics, just the same game with as many bugs as it is economically feasible to ferret out and destroy (i.e. Squad can't really do much about Unity's bugs).

Then for the re-release, to give old players something new, fill out the solar system with the second gas giant planet and perhaps an asteroid belt and some comets.

Calling this the release version after breaking nearly all the mods due to changes in game mechanics is inaccurate and just not cool.

Actually, I think the 1.0 release being a huge one is a big positive thing, from a developer perspective. It feels like a release. Not "just another version" as the community has come to expect and accept them over the years, but an actual release, the release, of the game. It feels like a whole new game over the 0.90 version, and damn right it should. Not just a tickbox that the game has reached a "released" state, but something fittingly grand, that both experienced players and new ones can experience - and review! - at the same time.
