The Apollo Applications Program: 1.0 Edition

Recommended Posts

Ah, I see what you mean. Well - I was not happy with stock versions of a 5m booster. And I woudn't like to go non-stock, so this is what I came up with. I admit, the iconic Saturn V profile has suffered. The complete Sleipnir V will looke someting like this:

Time for the first mission of the Odin programm: Sleipnir I OS-1

The second stage of the Sleipnir IB has been replaced with a dummy stage, this flight will only test the S-I stage.

The test was a full success - the engines fired for 2 minutes and 32 second and propelled the second stage to a 121.9 km apoapsis.

Apart from a single nosecone the rocket burned up completely during reentry.

Okay, all Saturn IB launches -at least those that matter - are safely deposited on imgur, immune to being lost on software crashes and viruses. Since I don't feel like posting things out of chronological order, though, I quess I'll get on launching all launches up to Eleven (literally) before I post my progress. In a while, however, people will finally know of the Artemis Programs succession!

Oh, and I don't feel like getting back on my AAR yet -at least not until I have finished my application. On the other hand, I'll be on holidays with neither an Internet connection nor access to KSP, so that might be a good time to finish some chapters.

Looking at all the progress being made is getting to me.

Some real life stuff keeps getting in the way of my game time, I might have a new job soon.

Hopefully sometime this weekend I can post another update with the first mission launch of my S-5.

Bye for now.

I have 1 question. For Apollo 9, do we go to the Mun, or do we stay in orbit?

Apollo 9 launched with a CM and LM but stayed in low earth orbit. They tested docking the CM to the LM and took the LM for a ride, flying up to 179km away from the CM before docking again. Seems like they used the descend engine to get away from the command module, shed the landing stage and returned using the ascend stage.

The second mission: Sleipnir I OS-2

The second test of the S-IB first stage was another complete success. The rocket flew a more realistic trjactory, putting the apoapsis right above the atmosphere and accelerating the second stage to 1427 m/s. The second stage burned up completely except for a nosecone.

I see. Thank you!

Xeldrak, why do I have the sneaking suspicion that this nosecone is just gonna get refurbished and refitted for the remainder of the Odin Program? I mean, it does have survived two flights by now, why stop here? :P

Gene K.: "What about that Nosecone?"

Bill K.: "We just found it - it's still useable. A few scratches here and there..."

Gene K.: "Well, just mount it ontop of the next rocket"

*Wernher von Kerman enters the room*

Gene K.: "Ah, Wernher - you called for another meeting?"

Wernher von K.: "Yes! Ze rocket needs to be testet anozer time!"

Gene K.: "But we allready tested it two times in the exact same configuration!"

Wernher von K.: "I don't care! Every stage of ze rocket needs to be testet zorroly!"

Gene K.: "How am I supposed to get the money for a third test that will tell us nothing new?"

Wernher von K.: "Zat's you problem! I am in charge of ze rockets!"

Gene K.: *sighs* "Allright, Wernher...."

*Wernher von Kerman leaves the room*

Bill K.: "We could shoot it straight up this time!"

Gene K.: "And what good will that do?"

Bill K.: "We will know how high it can go straight up!"

Gene K.: *sigh* "Whatever...."

This Week: Another important test of the Sleipnir IB rocket! This afternoon the third mission of the Odin Munar Program launched: Sleipnir I OS-3

The new test flight found that, if launched vertically, the S-IB stage can lift the dummy second stage to a hight of 162.65 km. Another step closer to the Mun!

... Please don't tell me the nosecone also survived a splashdown. If it did, get on to making a weapon of that nosecone material and unleash hell :P

Anyways, I decided I might as well post some of my progress up to this point.

Nah, that's standard issue nosecone behaviour, there is nothing to worry about. It's adressed in Nosecone Daily, next on "5 ways to make the your Nosecones respect you".

Also, my embedded ingur albums look a bit funky when inside the spoilers. What's the mater with that?

I'm not sure why they look funny. I use the [*imgur]...[*/imgur] (without *) command to post my albums.

Do you mind if I'm a nit-picker? I think your QTV mission is mislabeled. The QTV flight was just to test the Little Joe II rocket. It only had a dummy launch escape system and a boilerplate CSM. I think you are looking for the A-003 mission.

That's what I'm doing too. I don't know what's happening...

And no, I don't mind at all -you may have noticed I'm a fellow nitpicker myself. See, I didn't really want to label it as A-003 at first because my LJ never reached transonic speeds. On the other hand, it does seem that A-003 is at least closer... I'll change it right now.
