Spining space stations for no reason.

Recommended Posts

In Beta 0.9, I had a big space station (900 parts, lot of lag, 6 landers, 6 orange tanks) around Laythe. I used a lot to explore Jool's moon.

I like space stations.

To explore the Mun I built a space station, not as big (only 2 orange tanks and 2 identical and very small landers)

The station always start spinning, very slowly. I have e very hard time docking to it. On my big space station I never experienced slow spin. I just oriented the nose and translate to the docking port.

There is no reason for the station to get any movement until docking contact.

Have you experience that ?

Do you have SAS controls in the stations and is the SAS turned on?

with my stations i have always built SAS wheels into the design and enough electric charge for the dark side of a planet/mun so they can always run the reaction wheels because i always just assumed they would spin otherwise so idk if it is a new thing, but if it is it is a good feature to add, the SAS thing also makes docking wayyy easier, your craft will only push the other craft away it wont change its rotation if you bump into it.

This sounds a lot like something I've been running into myself.

Maybe, hard to tell.

Sometimes I even get explosive wobbleing. It starts wobbling until destruction. I think the problem is in my return ship. If I undock it things get better (not event sure). Maybe it's the shielding dock port. It's the first time I'm using it. I tried to change the return ship location, but it started an explosive wobbling.

I found that multiple reaction wheels were doing this to me...disable all but the one(s) on the station...

I'd say too many reaction wheels (which can't always be helped if each module that joins the station has one). To see if reactions wheels are the problem, switch of SAS and then timewarp a little bit to force the station to be still (you may need to time warp a couple times). Then leave SAS and MJ off and see if oscillations start again. If they don't then switch on SAS and I'd bet you oscillations will start.

I noticed that my orbit has changed. It was 16k*16k. It's now 16k*24k... No engines were fired. Only docking and transferring fuel.

The game has trouble with perfectly circular orbits, and floating point errors will cause the orbit to drift a bit over time, but 8,000 meters seems excessive. You may have an accidental Kraken Drive on your hands.

As I understand it, somewhere on your station there is a part or strut that is clipping into something else, resulting in an unbalanced force that causes the station to wobble. I remember reading somewhere that holding such a ship steady with reaction wheels can convert this wobble into linear motion that can alter your orbit.

The only parts I clipped are lights which I always insert into their parent to make it look better. On the Laythe space station, I had dozens of clipped lights (in docked ships and in the station itself).

Even if I deactivates reactions wheels (one large in the station, the return ship command pod and the 2 landing cans), the station is still spining.

I think I even had an explosive wobbling (not sure)

In one of my rendez-vous I arrived at the station with my landing ship, and I saw the station near an explosive wobbling (for one I wasn't controling the station. It took some time to recognize the effect. I barely had time to save the game.

BTW : Warping doesn't fix explosive wobbling but it stops spinning for a very short time.

Save and reload fix explosive wobbling though.
