I'm not too sure why you would want this but...

Start making LF, take it to 2km and at full throttle it will fly until the coal runs out, which is a very long way.

Made me start wondering about an ultra-slow flier a few cms above the ground, with a deployed drill... Actually, a car would work. Do the drills anchor themselves? To the SPH!

Edit: nah, a quick test shows that someone at Squad thought of this before I did: the drill needs to be stationary to work.

It could be cool having motherships that can land on larger bodies but also somewhat effective in space... now when NERVA only using fuel and not oxygen. Pick and choose how much fuel you would need for specific burns. See Ore is overpowered thread. That way you wouldnt have to haul around or balance tanks pending on the next burn.

EDIT: I did miss the first row of that tread. But still. Balancing tank should be simpler.. hmm, maybe not.

I was thinking of re-purposing the ISRU parts for a steampunk mod a few days ago. Basically, holding tanks would be able to hold coal, and a modified ISRU module would burn the coal and water (which would be storable in liquid fuel tanks, all of this using fuelswitch patch), and produce steam. Steam can be used to drive turbines for electricity, power RCS thrusters, rocket engines, and directly drive steam rover wheels.

Sorry about that. You have there a first mad experiment to get a ship to orbit powered by coal. Didn't work out terribly well (i.e. not at all).
