memory woes...

this is a question for heavy modded game players: how do you do it??

i am currently (only) running with EVE, Outer Planets, Orbital Science and some KW parts (10-15 parts) and some feature mods but no more parts. all together with ATM Basic and i am running into the memory limit more often than not. and i feel like its got worse with every new release of ksp.

do you use ATM aggressive? OpenGL? i am frequently watching lets plays on youtube and nearly everytime i have to ask myself how they manage to run tons of part mods (LLL, KW, B9 etc..) and NOT crash.. :D

Clearly if you have only 8GB on your PC you all have a hard time. I sure hope that most of you have 8 but I know that memory don't grow on trees.

OpenGL is the most common answer to memory problem. But the efficiency of that method is linked to how much memory your video card has. The more memory on the card the less on your PC RAM.

i have 16gigs, but as DestinyPlayer already mentioned 32bit KSP cannot use it.

sadly, OpenGL isn't running very well with my machine. i get texture flickering and all object shadows are missing.

force DX11 looks better and saves memory, but is as unstable as the 64bit windows unity player...

seems my only option is to use atm aggressive and accept the low quality... or to kick EVE or Outer Planets

Last I heard, ATM wasn't really doing anything. At least on my game I noticed no difference in RAM usage. Actually, it might have been slightly better without it. However, I don't use EVE or outer planets and EVE is older so maybe ATM does something for it. Have you tried to reduce the resolution on the textures via the settings menu? That seems to have a significant effect. Good Luck.

From my experience, ATM shines at making the game load fast as Jeb on a solid rocket booster after the first launch. For example, the first time I add a new mod, it takes about five minutes to load KSP. But when I launch it the second time, it's not even a minute.

Also yeah, lowering the vanilla settings could also work, but not that much I think, cause it probably only affects the vanilla textures.

RAM usage not so much anymore, but it fixes a big memory leak with TGA files in older mods, and mipmap issues with PNG textures. It is still useful.

ATM does not currently touch any textures that are converted to DDS -- many mods have switched to DDS so people aren't seeing the reduction they used to. Any increases are likely from ATM adding mipmaps to textures.
