Long range view distance is lagging game

Is there any way to lower the viewing distance for other craft? It seems to be dragging my system down to a halt with several craft in orbit, and having all of them nearby. I can barely run the game as it is, and for the first time, I saw the time indicator running red instead of yellow or green. It is quite frustrating to say the least.

I dont know of any way to reduce the render distance, but what kind of system do you have??

If it is a desktop system, you could simply get a really cheap GPU like for example the 750ti which should remove all bottlenecks caused by your GPU when it comes to KSP.

Once in orbit I'm pretty sure that the draw distance is still 2.2km, it's just been increased while in the atmo since 1.0. Is it having craft all within 2.2km that is the problem and if so do you know what the total part count of all the craft present is?

I don't know if this is still true (not used it in ages) but Romfarer's lazor system mod used to allow you to increase the draw distance, and I think you could also use it to decrease it.

It's around 22.5km if you are in the atmo or on a suborbital path. Once in orbit it's the usual 2.2km.

What we really need is an in-game setting to change the renter distances in all situations.

My observations agree with the responses above - I haven't seen any ships rendered farther than 2.5km while in space, although the little tracking dot appears as it always has.
