Daytime and Nightime in the VAB

Recommended Posts

KSP Version: 1.0.2 Windows 64-bit

Build ID: build id = 00842 2015.05.01 at 21:02:12 CEST Branch: master

**Forgive me if this is a repost, but I could not find anything relevant to search terms "cycle", "night", "day", "time", "VAB"**

What happens: Day/night cycle is not accurately portrayed in the SPH/VAB.

I am familiar with the idea that time does not pass in the VAB or SPH, this is a visual bug with reference to the portrayal of time in the VAP/SPH.

Steps to replicate the bug:

1) Accelerate time to point at which it is visibly night time at the Kerbal Space Center.

2) Enter the VAB, notice how the outside is daytime

Result:

The sky is not portrayed accurately in the day/night cycle

Fixes/Workarounds for the bug:

None, apart from just plain ignoring it. It's not really that big of an issue anyway. Unless you think the sky is big.

Not exactly an unmodded install. There is no Windows 64-bit version of 1.0.2.

That aside (it's not the cause of this anyway), this is a long standing cosmetic issue. I vaguely recall a mod that did this but can't seem to find the right search terms to locate it.

There is some hope that Scatterer may add night/day VAB exterior due to a fortuitous error which may end up being refined and used in the release.

Lights Out will allow you to turn the outside dark and shut the lights off at the same time (useful when trying to set up lights for docking or illuminating your space station without requiring you to launch to do it).

Also, IIRC Harv has said that this will not be changing (building in VAB/SPH will always be during daytime); though I can't be bothered to try to find the quote at the moment.

Nice but inaccurate, the real VAB and aircraft hangars are pretty well lit at night.

Correct sal_vager. I'm pretty sure the point of the Lights Out mod was to help with placing lights without having to go to launchpad/hyperedit, rather than trying to 100% accurately simulate the real VAB/hangers.

Yeah, lights-out needs a "lit at night" mode, and a sunrise/sunset filter, then we can pester Squad into talking to nodrog6 about incorporating it into stock ;)

Yep, totally agree with this sal...perhaps Lights Out should always follow the game's ToD (Time of Day) and the toggle could be just to turn interior lights off...but that's probably a topic for the mod thread, not here.

Thanks for doing the research I couldn't be bothered to...I knew it was in a devnote, just didn't want to take the time to dig :)

NP, I skipped over / didn't read your #4 post until now. This topic was one I remembered... in the OCD list of bookmarked dev comments I have ;)
