Flickering shadows and poor fps looking at ground

Recommended Posts

I used to use astronomers fps fix for the framrate problem but it doesn't seem to work anymore. I've turned down the terrain detail, pixel # etc but I still get big frame rate drops.

I also have gotten that flickering shadow issue again on my craft: like the shadows casted are flickering in and out of existence all the time.

Anyone know of a solution to one or both problems?

I'm also interested in what might be causing the shadow flickering. I'm seeing this sometimes. It only happens at certain camera and light angles. If I move the camera or change the time of day, the flickering goes away.

Pictures and/or log files would help us out in being able to see exactly what you are talking about, and to try and replicate the problem.

Check the sticky if you need help finding the files.

Cheers,

What else do you need besides video?

The usual cause of flickering shadows is having a large mesh (3d object) in the scene that is set to cast shadows but doesn't need to be. This uses up too much space on the video card (there is only a certain amount of video memory used for computing the shadows) causing some objects to not cast shadows.

I also see flickering shadows with craft on the launch pad. Try loading this craft and zoom in to the top of the ship (looking down about 45 degrees). I get a shadow that looks like a rotating cog under the pod and the battery.

So, I'm getting the flickering all the time now. As you can see in the video I linked to in previous post, it almost looks like a heat shimmering effect. What settings should I start changing?

I fixed it. I downloaded GeForce_Experience_v2.4.5.57.exe from the nvidia website and installed it. It updated my video drivers and optimized settings for KSP. Everything looks great now. Much, much better.
