your backyard have a fence?

On all sides. It's like a U with our house forming the inside of the U, with two gates in front of our house. Both are locked tight.

This guy jumped over the fence and the big plywood sheet we have to keep the dog out of the sideyard with the AC unit. He left the bike behind when he took off after we saw him.

Has it got barbed wire and/or spikes? There's nothing preventing anybody from going the vertical route.

No, we live in a place where barbed wire is probably illegal and I don't know if we can put spikes on that fence. We might need a new fence to do spikes.

This is why the top of my fence is electrified. Well officially its because of the cats but...it works against pesky neighborhood kids too.

It might stop kids, but it will not stop someone that is seriously after your bike.

Double-barrel; 1st shot is a warning, 2nd shot counts.

Please note that this might be viable in some countries (but certainly do not quote me on that nor act upon it), but that in a lot of other countries you will go to jail for pointing a gun at someone, let alone firing it. Loading it with salt or some kid having his hands on your bike will probably not save you either. Just to be clear.

Laws on that have many steps and conditions (for example imminent, life threatening danger, and "protecting your bike" are two very different things) so it's not a simple topic. But be sure that if someone is stealing your bike and you shoot him with intent of killing the person (in the head or very vital areas) will get you the maximum prison sentence pretty much everywhere because you've attempted and succeeded in a cold blooded murder.

Not here in 'Merica, you have the right to 'stand your ground' (read: shoot trespassers) in most states.

That's not entirely true. SOME states have strong castle doctrine, which does indeed state that if someone intrudes into your home, lethal response is allowed. In some places, this protection is extended to your vehicle, IF you are inside of it. MOST states require you to attempt to retreat first, even in your own home. If the intruder pursues or otherwise impedes escape, then a lethal response is allowed.

"Stand your ground" laws have nothing to do with trespassing.

If your life is being imminently threatened, that's self defense and doesn't matter where you are.

The spirit of all of these is to empower citizens to protect their lives and the lives of their loved ones, not to provide an excuse to kill people.

If you've that much disrespect for yourself and for others that you would trespass and steal/rob/etc, then perhaps you deserve what you get. I reserve the right to defend myself, my family, and my possessions/property... a thing you will not stop me from doing.

You're right, I won't. I have nothing to do with any of it, but you should be aware of what your local laws are.
