Advice Needed to Update Existing Game

Recommended Posts

I have updated my 1.0.2 career to 1.0.3. If you can, I would recommend landing and recovering any ships that have heatshields before you upgrade, as there is a bug with those that makes those ships not work if you transfer them over. There is a fix, but it's understandable if you don't want to do that.

Thanks for your reply Grumman. I will recover my ships, that's good advice.

I wasn't clear with my question I think, sorry: How do I update to 1.0.3? I have always started a new save with each iteration in the past but I just don't fancy starting again and downloading my 60+ mods. In the Launcher there is an update button, I clicked that and it turned grey but nothing seemed to happen. There is a zipped Patcher file in the KSP folder but that has no files in it, when I click to extract it says "An Error Occurred While Loading the Archive."

Edit: I bought the game direct from Squad, not Steam.

Your best bet is probably the following:

Install KSP 1.0.3 alongside 1.0.2, e.g. if KSP is currently in C:\Games\KSP then install 1.0.3 into C:\Games\KSP_1.0.3

Copy all of your mods from your 1.0.2 GameData folder to your 1.0.3 GameData folder (everything in there except for the Squad folder)

Run KSP 1.0.3, configure the settings as you like and give it a quick test by creating a new game

If it works ok then copy (not move) your save from your 1.0.2 saves folder to your new 1.0.3 install

Load the save in 1.0.3 and (hopefully) enjoy...

This way, if you do get problems with your save in 1.0.3 you can go back to 1.0.2 and everything will still be as you left it.

Ah, I see. With the info I read about auto-updating and patching I was expecting some sort of patch file. OK nice, I've just followed the above and put the old gamedata files (-Squad) into the new gamedata folder. I'm not expecting all the mods to have been updated already but this seems like the best way to do things. I've a feeling that it will break CKAN but AVC should keep me updated with mod changes.

Thanks Padishar!

I've not done much with CKAN but you may well be right that this could confuse it. You might like to ask on the CKAN thread or their IRC channel.

I believe that CKAN lets you "export" your current mod setup and then it should let you "import" it into the new install. This may download all the mods again (not sure how clever it is) and you will lose mod specific settings but it should result in CKAN working...
